Parkman set out in 1846, not 1848, as you say at the beginning of your synopsis. This is a gripping account of life on the American frontier by a young Brahmin who correctly perceived that it told of a way of life that was going to be extremely short-lived. Parkman's mordant sense of humor in the face of extreme physical hardship and occasional life-threatening danger is remarkable. The wanton slaughter of buffalo in which he revels is hard to reconcile with the sensitivity with which he otherwise views the natural world of the American West.
