From the New York Times and international bestselling author of the Matched trilogy, Ally Condie, comes a brand new mysterious world!

Can you hear Atlantia breathing?

For as long as she can remember, Rio has dreamt of the sand and sky Above—of life beyond her underwater city of Atlantia. But in a single moment, all her plans for the future are thwarted when her twin sister, Bay, makes an unexpected decision, stranding Rio Below. Alone, ripped away from the last person who knew Rio’s true self—and the powerful siren voice she has long hidden—she has nothing left to lose.

Guided by a dangerous and unlikely mentor, Rio formulates a plan that leads to increasingly treacherous questions about her mother’s death, her own destiny, and the complex system constructed to govern the divide between land and sea. Her life and her city depend on Rio to listen to the voices of the past and to speak long-hidden truths.

A New York times bestseller!

Atlantia by Ally Condie 🌟🌟🌟🌟🐟I’m obsessed with Atlantis, and although I know this doesn’t take place in Atlantis, that’s the original reason I had to pick this book up and see what it was about. I wasn’t disappointed. Atlantia (Below) is green and blue and beautifully wondrous. Most of the novel is about the underwater city, and surprisingly, religion played a huge role in this book. I’m not normally one to enjoy novels with religious undertones, but I found the discussion of religion quite interesting in this setting, especially when juxtaposed against the religion of Above. Also, the central theme is more about family and less about love or action. So, if you enjoy reading more about new worlds and family, you’ll enjoy this novel, but I wouldn’t recommend it to those in search for heavy action or romance. Honestly, I was on the fence about whether this was a 3- or 4-star read for me. I love my action scenes, and there weren’t a lot in this novel. But because of all the amazing one-liners—not to mention my favorite animal (bats)—I ended up on a 4-star read. The one-liners are brilliant. I often found myself pausing just to highlight a quote or think about it, and I love it when a novel does that to me! I also managed to get my copy signed. So kudos goes out to Ally Condie for being an awesome author.~SATFavorite quote: People can be miracles.(But—seriously—it was difficult to pick one quote.)

I wish each of my friends had finished reading Atlantia right now. Then, I would invite you all to my house where we could have an Atlantia themed party on my deck. I'd set a long table with brown burlap and sparkly turquoise ribbon, strewn with hundreds of shells. Overhead I'd string metallic silver leaves and lights. We'd eat delicious food from Above and Below. Then we'd all take our dog eared copies of Atlantia from our purses, sink into our chairs and chat. . .

about the awesomeness of this book. Sigh.

A year ago I saved this quote by editor Cheryl Klein: ". . .a book is kind of like a good Horcrux, if we can imagine that- A piece of the writer's soul, preserved in a physical object for all time. And changing the lives of all those who come in contact with it." I came away changed by this bit of Condie's soul preserved in this novel.

Atlantia is rich, detailed, and soul-filling. It featured one of the most UNIQUE worlds I have read, ever. I must admit I am DYING for it to be made into a movie. I would love to see this world of Above and Below on the big screen. I also wouldn't mind seeing Rio and True:).

I love the political, cultural, and religious systems that Condie created. Again, unlike another other novel I've read. I'm trying to keep this spoiler-free (that's why I need you to all come over here so we can talk in person!). . .but I loved the way each thread tied up at the end completely satisfying and unexpected.

You will root for Rio, fall in love with True. You will also want to swim in the underwater lanes, travel by boat through the city and enter the gargoyle-filled temples. This is a world I want to see and live in. With characters I would like to be friends (well, most of them).

I found myself tearing through this book, but of course trying to slow myself down to savor it. I frequently grinned and shouted, "It's genius!" This was obviously a very carefully crafted story.

I have already ordered a small army of copies to give as gifts. Each Christmas I usually choose one favorite book of the year to give away. Atlantia is an easy choice this year. One I can share with my closest friends, mom, and daughter (who already read and loved it and declared it her 2014 favorite as well). Since I can't gift it to each and every one of you, give yourself a gift and order it now. Trust me. You will love it. Then we can have that party I am imagining. . .

. . .and at the end of our book group party, we'd each choose a shell that best represents our own life's story and remember we each have an important story to tell.

Thank you again, Ally Condie for sharing this story.

The first chapter was great and totally hooked me. Betrayed by your twin sister? Can't begin better than that. However, as it went on I found myself not really attached to Rio (btw we didn't find out her name until chapter 3 I think?) We found out quickly that Rio wasn't actually betrayed, her sister is good. Better than Rio. Than why shouldn't care more about Rio than i do about bay? Maybe it should have been bays story. But it was Rios and I can accept that.

The world was cool and that's what kept me hooked. The first half of the book was slow and repetitive. The romance was dull. I get the emphasis on family but why not have the best of both worlds?

When the deep market flooded I became interested. That was the mid-reversal point. When the s*** hits the fan and nothing that was planned is going to be possible now. Then things got sucky again.

Rio makes it up with true (I hate condie's character names btw) and the above is nothing like what I think it will be. It's messy, chaotic, unlikable, un-enchanting.

The voices in shells are one among many corny things. I guess it was YA but not meant for little kids. The first person present tense voice didn't resonate with me. I found it distracting.

And did it bother anyone else that we have NO idea what Rio looked like? I get wanting the reader to identify with their own imagined image but give me SOME kind of direction.

Anyway, 4 stars for concept and the last half. 4 stars for description and unique concept.

Hmmmm... What did I think of this one? I read it all in the span of a few hours one night so I could pass it along to my sister for book club. Reading it all in one sitting, I never lost interest. The plot got a little slow in the middle, but nothing major.

This story is about Rio, a girl who lives in the underwater world of Atlantia, but who has always longed to move above. After the death of their mother, Rio's twin sister, Bay, begs her to stay below at the choosing ceremony and she obliges. However, Bay chooses to go above, leaving her sister no explanation. Discovering why Bay left was interesting to me and I wanted to know why.

Rio begins planning an escape to go above and find out why her sister left, but more secrets and mysteries become uncovered.

I liked Rio okay and liked her love interest, True, a lot. Maire, Rio's powerful siren aunt, was certainly the most fascinating character. You and Rio don't know whether or not you can trust her nearly the whole story. Characterization overall wasn't a strong point in this story, though.

The world of Atlantia was interesting, although there did seem to be some unanswered questions about it. Why did people live longer down below? Where did their air come from? I wasn't sure until the very end of the story if the book was meant to take place in our world and at what time period it was taking place.

The religious aspect of it was very different. I haven't decided what I think of it. It also seemed to leave unanswered questions about whether or not the religion was true, but in the end, it didn't matter too much. It's very different to have a YA book with such a focus on gods, worship, and miracles.

The strongest part of the story was the plot, mysteries, and the premise. It has a unique basis, with the underwater world, the world above, and the sirens. I didn't feel the "love story" was at all needed, but it didn't detract too much from the main story. The plot and finding out what happened to Bay and her mother kept me reading and engaged in the story.

3/5 stars. I would recommend it if someone were really into sirens, but that's about it.

Fun story. Very very similar to the City of Ember though. Maybe too similar. Not worth buying though. I'll never read it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Refreshing Take on Dystopian Literature
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 29, 2015
I have been a fan of Ally Condie's ever since the release of her debut novel - MATCHED. After the conclusion of that series, I was excited to see what Miss Condie would conjure up next for us. Her new novel, ATLANTIA, is everything I could have asked for, and more.

I have read many dystopian novels. Matched, The Hunger Games, The Selection, just to name a few. I have never read a YA dystopian novel quite like this, though. Condie has created a whole new angle on the genre, and I love it.

Rio Conwey has dreamt of the sand between her toes, and the sun glaring on her tanned skin for her entire life. Life beyond the underwater world of Atlantia is her deepest desire - a life Above. But, with just one word everything changes. At the Dividing Ceremony her twin sister, Bay, suddenly decides on life Above, stranding Rio Below. Rio formulates a plan to harness her hidden voice as a siren and find her way Above to be reunited with her sister, and gain answers to all her unanswered questions.

Much to my disappointment, ATLANTIA is a standalone novel, so I will not get the delight of reading more about my new favourite collection of characters. I loved this novel, even more so than her MATCHED series, and I felt refreshed that Condie hadn't succumbed to the quintessential YA Dystopian formula. I cannot recommend this novel highly enough, and I am very excited to see what else Condie has up her sleeve!

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful story but above all a lovely writing
Reviewed in France on January 12, 2015
Even if I liked this story less than the Matched trilogy, I really enjoyed the fluidity and beauty of the words.
Atlantia was really well introduced and it was easy to feel immersed into it. ;) I particularly loved the "shells" bit.
I found the plot a little bit too light though, but I think that this is due to the "one shot" as opposed to the trilogy.

All in all, I recommend this book but highly suggest you read "Matched" if you have not done so yet.

(sorry if I made some mistakes, English is not my first language)

4.0 out of 5 stars That's All?
Reviewed in Canada on November 7, 2014
Ally Condie is a talented author, writing not just for entertainment but to provoke deeper thought. Her turns of phrase are often beautiful and her characters are freshly relatable. But somehow, despite all that, Atlantia fell a bit flat for me. I kept waiting for something more that never came. The writing felt hurried, like there weren't enough pages to fit everything in. The story isn't exactly what I was expecting, either, but I didn't mind that; it turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 15, 2015
Ally Condie does it again, a strong story where the characters learn and deal with the lies that have been told them about their state of living. Excellent. Though it states that this is the first book, I'm not sure after the ending where the story can further develop. This is the reason I've only given it 4 stars rather than 5, the plot line in this book could have been a little more developed in the way that the plot and characters were in Matched. This novel is significantly shorter than any of the Matched books, so perhaps it is aimed at a slightly younger audience. Great read, and will become part of my active bookshelf of re-reads.
