I've always liked Dorling Kindersley's eyewitness travel guides. They're well written and beautifully illustrated, usually with lots of high quality photos of key places to visit. This little guide is no exception and covers the essential landmarks and cultural highlights for those with a few days to spend in the city. There are 15 neighbourhoods described, each chapter covering the best sights, plus some detail of standout shopping and eating. Practical survival information is provided in the last three short chapters. There's no advice on where to stay, but this is comprehensively covered online these days. Inside the back cover you have a good fold-out map of the central areas and a subway guide.
This mini-guide is an abridged version of the latest full Eyewitness Guide and I found it a bit difficult to read as the text is quite small - if you're visually challenged in any way you might be better buying the full-sized version, although it'll cost more. The great thing about this mini-guide though is the ease with which it'll fit in your pocket or backpack as you tour New York, ready to whip out if you get lost or are looking for somewhere to eat. You could visit New York with just this in your pocket and get around quite nicely. It will be included in my survival kit when I visit next year.
