About this ebook

These eight tales of survival and triumph, suffused with magical realism, bring to life the harsh struggles, the dreams, the greed, the obsessions, the xenophobia — and the love — experienced by the trappers and prospectors who flocked to northern Ontario during the Porcupine Gold Rush (1900 – 1922).

About the author

Melissa Hardy, winner of the 1994 Journey Prize, was inspired to write "The Uncharted Heart" while visiting her husband's family in Timmins. Like the lead character in "The Bockles," her husband's Cornish grandfather was recruited by the agent of a gold-mining company. She is the author of A Cry of Bees and Constant Fire, and her work has been widely anthologized. She lives in London, Ontario.
