Kaleidoscope (Madame Karitska Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,017 ratings

Next to the incomparable Mrs. Pollifax, Dorothy Gilman’s best-loved character is the mysterious Madame Karitska, who is blessed with a powerful gift of clairvoyance that attracts to her a stream of men and women craving help with their misfortunes, desperate to know what the future holds. . . .

When a brilliant young violinist dies in a horrific accident, Madame Karitska has only to hold the victim’s instrument in her hands to perceive the shocking truth. But when an insecure wife asks whether her husband will abandon her to join a sinister cult, Madame Karitska–as wise as she is lovely–chooses not to reveal all that she foresees. And when an attaché case is suddenly dropped into her lap by a man fleeing a crowded subway, she knows it’s time to consult her good friend Detective-Lieutenant Pruden.

A nine-year-old accused of murder, a man dying a slow death by witchcraft– for the hunted and the haunted, Madame Karitska’s shabby downtown apartment becomes a haven, where brilliant patterns of violence, greed, passion, and strange obsessions mix and disintegrate with stunning, kaleidoscopic beauty.

Once again Dorothy Gilman exercises her own uncanny power to render readers spellbound.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Fans of Gilman's Mrs. Pollifax series will welcome this tantalizing sequel to The Clairvoyant Countess (1975), whose psychic heroine is adept at psychometry, "the faculty of divining knowledge about an object or a person connected with it through contact with the object." Here Madame Karitska and her friend on the Trafton police force, Detective Lieutenant Pruden, share a series of adventures in which they confront the heartless killer of a talented young violinist, save a deaf-mute child from the accusations of her supposed benefactress, help a spoiled heiress find a purpose in life and assist a timid artist to gain confidence and fame. A travel writer suffering from a mysterious illness, a beautiful little boy who can't speak and, finally, Roger Gillespie, an intelligence officer on the trail of a rogue genius who plans doomsday from his headquarters at an electronics company in Maine all bring their pains and problems to Madame Karitska's shabby brownstone, where they find not only solace and solutions but frequently soul mates among her other clients. One wonders if the author herself is psychic, for the mad scientist's plan to bring the world to a halt bears an uncanny resemblance to the unfolding terror of the past few months. Hopefully, Gilman won't wait another quarter century before she brings back Madame Karitska, if nothing else to explain the sudden, rather stingy ending of this fascinating, kaleidoscopic potpourri.

From Library Journal

Madame Karitska's trade as a fortune-teller attracts a strange array of clients, including an artistic woman whose husband abandons her to join a religious cult and an Italian immigrant with a "cursed" child. Karitska also helps her good friend, Detective-Lieutenant Pruden, solve the hit-and-run death of a young violinist and the murder of a local philanthropist. Her most troubling case, however, occurs when a subway incident leaves her with an attache case full of diamonds. This well-written, episodic adventure, with a generous and charming Old World heroine who first appeared 25 years ago in The Clairvoyant Countess, will appeal to many, especially fans of Gilman's Mrs. Polifax series.

Madame Karitska character is fascinating! The storyline used by Gilman was so very interesting for me. I love cozies and if you do too, please give this one a try. There are only two books in this series. I wished there were more but I believe her Mrs. Pollifax mysteries took front row in her writings. They too are highly recommended by me. Give them all a try!

Recommend for a good read

I first discovered that Ms Gilman’s world extended past Mrs Polifax decades ago. I have long loved this book and its companion “The Clairvoyant Countess”. The interwoven threads of the characters’ lives create a rich tapestry. I am also struck by her awareness of the future possibilities. My only complaint is that with the loss of Ms Gilman, I will have to enjoy the stories she left behind, knowing that no new books will be forthcoming. Read and delight, possibly with a cup of Turkish coffee.

I love everything Dorothy Gilman has written, but this is one of my favorite short series (2 books). Madame Karitska is a lovely character who heals in gentle ways.

The further adventures of Madame Karitska is just as satisfying as the first book about her, The Clairvoyant Countess. Enjoyable.

Gilman’s writing introduces characters that are charming and comforting to one’s worldview—but her villains aren’t, and she doesn’t shrink from imagining the worst implications of modern life.

The clairvoyant countess is at it again - this time around the thrice married Madame Karitska is still the downstairs tenant of the painter Kristian and busy feeling emanations from all sorts of people. Too many people, actually. Yes, Madame has to make a living, but there are serious problems in her town all brought to her by clients (and the friendly police). There is the greedy young wife, the megalomaniac in the guise of a sect leader, a robber, a wayward pampered daughter, a smitten former burglar, a dead film star, heroin sellers and desperate ex-CIA agents. And more. Too many for an otherwise quiet town. I gave it three stars because it is easy to read and makes no attempt to be anything but entertainment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very interesting Countess

I remembered borrowing this book from the library several years ago, but for some reason, returned it without finishing it. Recently I re-read A Nun In The Closet, one of my favourite Dorothy Gilman books, and also bought Thale's Folly, which I hadn't read before. Next I read The Clairvoyant Countess and then this one, Book 2 of this series.

It was just what I was looking for, a nice collection of linked stories, gentle but with some sinister elements (Roger Gillespie, the expert in anti-terrorism). I love the idea of Madame Karitska in her brownstone flat, helping her clients with psychometry and clairvoyance. Really enjoyed both the Madame Karitska books.

Sadly I didn’t find this sequel to “The Clairvoyent Countess” as an audio book as I head enjoyed its speaker very much.
This book is a mix of likeable and interesting characters navigating different story lines. They are well organised so I didn’t feel lost. Some them continue through the whole book which made it and intriguing read until the end. Zooming in on the psychic abilities of some of the characters creates a second layer of reality which I found enticing. A somewhat magical experience which sparks thoughts about the limits of our sensual experience and what else might be out there …
Loved it!!

Gilman's books are like chocolates. The more you read, the more you want. The character of Madame Karishka is uncommon, other characters are quite interesting. The suspense is not intense but the plot develops as you read into a charming mosaic of mystery stories.
