Publisher Description

The definitive biography of Alan Shepard, America’s first man in space, with a new Foreword by Chris Kraft

“One of the finest books ever written about the space program.”—Homer Hickan, author of Rocket Boys

“A wonderful and gripping biography . . . meticulously reported in the best tradition of David Halberstam.”—Buzz Bissinger, New York Times bestselling author of Friday Night Lights

Alan Shepard was the brashest, cockiest, and most flamboyant of America’s original Mercury Seven, but he was also regarded as the best. Intense, colorful, and dramatic, he was among the most private of America’s public figures and, until his death in 1998, he guarded the story of his life zealously.

Light This Candle, based on Neal Thompson’s exclusive access to private papers and interviews with Shepard’s family and closest friends—including John Glenn, Wally Schirra, and Gordon Cooper—offers a riveting, action-packed account of Shepard’s life.

HENRY A. KYLE III ,

FIRST AMERICAN IN SPACE: ALAN B. SHEPARD JR.

On May 5, 1961; America had its First Man in Space! REAR ADMIRAL ALAN BARTLETT SHEPARD JR., USN (Ret.); one of the original “Mercury Seven” astronauts was selected by NASA for a sub-orbital spaceflight lasting slightly over fifteen (15) minutes. The Mercury-Redstone 3 would propel his “FREEDOM 7” spacecraft to an altitude of 101.2 nautical miles above the surface of the Earth. It was a monumental success that drove the Space Race to its ultimate victory; by putting a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth before the end of the 1960’s. This biographical memoir takes the reader back to Shepard’s childhood; growing-up in Derry, New Hampshire.
What better way to commemorate the life and accomplishments of a true American Hero; than reading this extremely well written and incredibly accurate expose on the 59th Anniversary of the First American in Space! A graduate of the United States Naval Academy- Annapolis, MD and a graduate of the Naval War College- Newport, RI.; Alan Shepard epitomizes the true meaning of duty and commitment.
A must read for any aerospace/aeronautical enthusiast of the early pioneers of the U.S. Manned Space Program. Neal Thompson’s book; “LIGHT THIS CANDLE: The Life & Times of Alan Shepard, America’s First Spaceman” encapsulates the entire story of one of America’s Greatest Heroes!
Climb aboard this adventure into space; you won’t be disappointed. You may even get a whiff of that burning candle... so start the journey and... “Light This Candle”!
