Publisher Description

BOOKER PRIZE WINNER • NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A sharp contemporary morality tale, cleverly disguised as a comic novel, Amsterdam is "a dark tour de force, perfectly fashioned" (The New York Times) from the bestselling author of Atonement.

On a chilly February day, two old friends meet in the throng outside a London crematorium to pay their last respects to Molly Lane. Both Clive Linley and Vernon Halliday had been Molly's lovers in the days before they reached their current eminence: Clive is Britain's most successful modern composer, and Vernon is a newspaper editor. Gorgeous, feisty Molly had other lovers, too, notably Julian Garmony, Foreign Secretary, a notorious right-winger tipped to be the next prime minister. In the days that follow Molly's funeral, Clive and Vernon will make a pact with consequences that neither could have foreseen…

A Winning Tale

Another good book by Ian M. who has a long history of good books...EAF

Scott's take on things ,

With friends like these . . .

Ian McEwan’s writing is as terrific as ever and the plot moves along quickly. However, the setup, two friends coming to despise one another enough to commit murder, stretched believability too much. So, what was left was a clever but questionable plot and McEwan’s storytelling skills, not enough to produce a top notch novel.

A twisting morality tale

The story proceeds from the cremation of a woman who died from a brain disease that left her without a sense of self. Three of her former lovers are present and there story is told. Two, a composer and newspaper editor end up being euthanized in Amsterdam. The story of the creative process both for the newspaper editor and composer make for fascinating reading. The implosion of their personalities adds a negative tone to the story.
