From the acclaimed author of Gone Girl, “a riveting tale of true horror by a writer who has all the gifts to pull it off” (Chicago Tribune)

“Sensuous and chilling . . . a propulsive and twisty mystery.”—Entertainment Weekly

Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in “The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas.” She survived—and famously testified that her fifteen-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, the Kill Club—a secret society obsessed with notorious crimes—locates Libby and pumps her for details. They hope to discover proof that may free Ben.

Libby hopes to turn a profit off her tragic history: She’ll reconnect with the players from that night and report her findings to the club—for a fee. As Libby’s search takes her from shabby Missouri strip clubs to abandoned Oklahoma tourist towns, the unimaginable truth emerges, and Libby finds herself right back where she started—on the run from a killer.

This book grew on me over the time I read it. It caught my attention right off the bat, and it would not let go until I found out who the killer was. I knew I had to finish it and it did well taking the reader on a long journey to finding out the truth. In the way, there was a lot of tension building and mixed feelings. The dim gritty feel at the beginning makes you feel anxious and bothered, but you are left feeling at rest and at peace in the end. It's a good book to stir inside you misery and death.

Gillian Flynn is a twisted chick...and my new favorite author! This is the second book of hers that I read (Gone Girl was the first) and I liked them both. I enjoy the parallel storytelling from various perspectives. From the two books that I read, it seems like a normal person writes the first 90% of the book. Then she forgets to take her meds and finishes the last 10%! The books start out slow with the usual character development and then things get CRAZY!! I usually have to re-read the last couple of chapters, because I just can't believe what the hell just happened. Finally she does a great job of tying everything back together and restoring my sanity. Dark Places is definitely DARK. It was a little slow to start, but stick with it. I was not prepared for the ending. I enjoyed Dark Places more than Gone Girl. Only because the wife in Gone Girl was so aggravating that I thought she deserved to be waterboarded with acid. Hopefully that wasn't a spoiler for you.

I guiltily enjoyed this book. It was very disturbing and I didn't even like the main character, at first. The author has a way of drawing you in to the lives of the characters. Even the most mundane act gives you insight as the story unfolds. At times you are really struggling to find out the truth but in the end, you discover that it was just a lot of bad decisions being made that resulted in devastating consequences. Everyone seemed to be a victim of circumstance. Definitely a good read.
