Amazon.com Review
Robert Cormier--winner of the Margaret A. Edwards Award and many other honors--has once again crafted a riveting yarn of psychological suspense. Francis's story is revealed only gradually in hints that keep the reader guessing. Young teens will find it a quick and absorbing read, and older adolescents (and full-fledged adults, too) will relish pondering the many-sided ethical questions Cormier raises about heroism, guilt, and forgiveness. Oh, I have eyes because I can see and eardrums because I can hear but no ears to speak of, just bits of dangling flesh. But that's fine, like Dr. Abrams says, because it's sight and hearing that count and I was not handsome to begin with. He was joking, of course. He was always trying to make me laugh.
If anything bothers me, it's my nose. Or rather, the absence of my nose. My nostrils are like two small caves and they sometimes get blocked and I have to breathe through my mouth. This dries up my throat and makes it hard for me to swallow. I also become hoarse and cough a lot. My teeth are gone but my jaw is intact and my gums are firm, which makes it possible for me to wear dentures. In the past few weeks, my gums began to shrink, however, and the dentures have become loose and they click when I talk and slip around inside my mouth.
I have no eyebrows, but eyebrows are minor, really. I do have cheeks. Sort of. I mean, the skin that forms my cheeks was grafted from my thighs and has taken a long time to heal. My thighs sting when my pants rub against them. Dr. Abrams says that all my skin will heal in time and my cheeks will someday be as smooth as a baby's arse. That's the way he pronounced it: arse. In the meantime, he said, don't expect anybody to select you for a dance when it's Girls' Choice at the canteen.
Don't take him wrong, please.
He has a great sense of humor and has been trying to get me to develop one.
I have been trying to do just that. But not having much success.

I spoke about it throughout college but couldn't remember the name. Finally I googled it and now one of my favorite books is back in my life.
Highly recommended.
Larry LaSalle, was described as an extradinary character. He would walk in a Fred Astaire way and smile the old movie-star smile. He was great in every sport, mainly known as a dancer. The only background that everyone knew about Larry was that he was a star in New York and Chicago. However nobody knew of his reason for his return back to Frenchtown.
Larry LaSalle was a true hero for the kids. At the Wreck Center, he would always be around to encourage the kids, and would always find a way to make each individual a star. He turned a bully into a singer, a shy gawky girl into a dancer, an imcompetent individual, our main character Francis, to exceed in a sport, ping-pong(oh excuse me, table tennis).
This book was especially special for me as I recall precious memories of when I was a child going to the recreation center every day during the summer.
Larry LaSalle became especially close to Francis and his young glamouring girlfriend, Nicole Renard. Nicole was a goddess to Francis. She was everything to him... but something tragic happened to change their lives... which caused Francis Cassavant to carry out his "mission".
I truly love this book. It's a book that will remain in your memories.
The first of the two plots is the one of a young lover. Francis Cassavant a young boy who lives in the small town of Frenchtown is shy, lonely, and unpopular until two things happen. First Francis meets a girl named Nicole Renard who was to be the love of his life until Larry stepped into the picture. Larry Lasalle, a cunning, rich, and handsome actor starts an after school program to show girls how to dance and boys how to play table tennis, but what went wrong?
The second plot the one of revenge, pain, suffering, and of course death. The day after Larry's return from war Francis lies about his age and signs on to fight himself, but why? Francis is shipped to Europe to fight. While he is there he loses a lot of his friends in a fire-fight and when a grenade is thrown into the alley they are taking shelter in Francis throws himself on top of it to prevent any more death, but was that the only reason?
Now Francis is back in Frenchtown with half his face missing from the grenade. What will Nicole think of his new look, what happened to Larry, why does Francis still hold a grudge? Read this book to find out.
