A disarmingly involving portrait of a family struggling to stay together through the Great Depression, The Cape Ann is an unforgettable story of life from a child’s-eye view.

Lark Erhardt, the six-year-old narrator of The Cape Ann, and her fiercely independent mother dream of owning their own house; they have their hearts set on the Cape Ann, chosen from a house catalog. The Cape Ann

The author is a wonderful storyteller. The descriptions of growing up in the early part of the 1900s in rural America were so accurate and took me back to my childhood. This is a book I will not soon forget.

Effective Character Study, But Too Long...

The style in which this book is written is very effective. Told through the eyes of a young girl, it gives that deep character exploration you might find in one of John Haessler’s books about small town life.

The issue is that scene after scene of small town life really do not build on each other in service of moving the story along. For the first 3/4 of the book, it’s a slice of life... not really going anywhere. It’s the type of book that you keep reading, hoping it will get better. After you’re 175 pages in, then you don’t stop because of the investment you’ve made.

The last four chapters finally bring a crescendo to the story, but ultimately it’s unsatisfying for me... given the investment of time.

The Cape Ann

A wonderful Depression era story. Six year old Lark tells the story of her Minnesota family struggling along with the rest of the country. Besides Lark and her mis-matched parents, there are several locals as well as family members.....all colorful characters. Some laugh out loud moments and some touching scenes. I loved this story!!
