Having been a mystery fan for decades, with emphasis on more literate characterizations (think Raymond Chandler), I was really happy to read two of the Ross MacDonald entries from the 1950s. I then watched the Paul Newman/Harper (why did they change it from Archer ... the film success of Hud. Hustler. Hombre mean they needed an "H" ?). Anyway, I digress, but I was hooked.
Many consider this the best of the Ross Macdonald/Archer novels. Personally, that is only partially true as I found it to be one of the Best American Mystery Novels I have read (Ok, so the author was born in Canada, I correct myself).
Please try this compelling, absorbing and memorable book, Chandler would have been a bit envious.
