The first book the author's Russian grandfather bought on emigrating to the U.S., though he neither read nor spoke English, was about the Civil War, a book he still pored over into his 90s. And when Horwitz was a child, his father read him tales of the Civil War instead of fairy tales and children's literature. I greatly enjoyed this book and it made me fan of Tony Horwitz. He is able to combine humor with factual history in a very readable manor.
Old times there are not forgotten
For anyone who has stared at the Brady black and whites, who has stood in the treeline as Pickett's men did an instant before stepping out onto that gentle upslope to oblivion, who has sensed the genteel gnaw of...what?..."otherness" south of the Mason-Dixon, read this book. Period.
Captivating, and humorous, a new perspective on the war!
I am a USC history major and had to read This book for class and am so glad I did! This book is a refreshing new perspective of the war and it's heritage and the battle that still rages on! A must read
