Publisher Description

The now-classic guide to alcoholism returns with new, enlightening research that confirms the revolutionary ideas first trailblazed by this book in a time when such theories were unheard of—now featuring a new foreword, new resources, and the same reliable insights and easy-to-read style.

“This book is truly informative, powerful, and an invaluable resource on overcoming alcoholism.”—Angela Diaz, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H.

Ten of millions of Americans suffer from alcoholism, yet most people still wrongly believe that alcoholism is a psychological or moral problem that can be “cured” once the purported underlying psychological problems or moral failings of the alcoholic are addressed. Based on groundbreaking scientific research, Under the Influence examines the physical factors that set alcoholics and non-alcoholics apart, and suggests a bold, stigma-free way of understanding and treating the disease of alcoholism.

You’ll learn:
• How to tell if someone you know is an alcoholic.
• The progressive stages of alcoholism.
• How to help an alcoholic into treatment and how to choose the right treatment program.
• Why diet and nutritional therapy are essential elements of treatment.
• Why frequently prescribed medications can be dangerous for alcoholics.
• How to ensure a lasting recovery.

An essential resource for anyone hoping to better understand the nature of alcoholism—whether you are looking to support a loved one or learning how to best care for yourself—it’s no wonder this innovative work has been hailed as “the best book ever written on alcoholism” (AA Beyond Belief). This special updated edition of Under the Influence will continue to earn its standing as a classic in the alcoholism field for years to come.

Under Influence

If people had this information before they had their first drink maybe futures would be changed. This is scientific information that explains what alcohol does starting at the cellular level. This is why it is so hard to avoid drinking. AA has its place and works for some but for someone that has tried and failed over and over this approach could make the difference. There are programs that treat alcoholism using this scientific information and people are staying clean and sober with no cravings. Don’t get stuck trying something you have already tried with no success. Why not try something else if you really want a life again. Thank you for this information. I know understand the damage that has been done to my Mom’s brain. It has helped me be more sincere and understanding.

A lot of interesting and valuable information on the drug alcohol and the workings of the disease. As far as recovery goes I wouldn't trade my kind of sobriety for the kind offered in this book. The author completely ignores the non-material /spiritual element of lasting quality sobriety . In this book one is encouraged to "attend AA meetings " but to follow a softer easier way of doing the steps particularly step 4. If you are a real alcoholic you do so at your own peril. If this authors way has worked for some alcoholics my hats off to you. For me , I drank for 40 years. I had the craving. I could not control my drinking. I have been in more therapy than I can count. Inpatient , outpatient on and on. It was not until I had a vital spiritual experience particular to drinking that I am free today. I don't have the craving. I'm not obsessed by alcohol. I'm not tempted even though I'm around drinkers and alcohol every weekend being a professional musician. I credit God and AA for this. "Attending meetings " will accomplish little unless it is accompanied by reading the AA book , getting a sponsor and taking the steps. In which case a vital spiritual experience can be had that will change your life forever. P.S. it's a daily reprieve based on the maintenance of
ones spiritual condition. If I could have only one secular book it would be the AA BIG BOOK not Under The Influence.
