4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 154 ratings

Until recently, the effortless "Zone" of peak performance was only within the reach of serious athletes. Now, with Body, Mind, and Sport, anyone can reach the Zone, regardless of fitness level.

Designed to accommodate a variety of individual fitness needs, the
Body, Mind, and Sport program is split into two levels. Level 1 is for non-athletes who want to improve overall fitness; Level 2 is for those who want to train for competitive or recreational purposes. Your own unique mind-body type is taken into account to guide you in achieving your personal best without stress or strain. In this revised and updated edition of Body, Mind, and Sport, fitness expert and trainer John Douillard outlines a program in which your individual seasonal constitution-Winter, Spring, or Summer-determines what exercises or sports are best suited to your mind-body type and what foods you should eat for optimum results.

Using the
Body, Mind, and Sport approach you can decrease heart and breath rates while improving both fitness and performance. Dozens of world-class athletes, including Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King, have used John Douillard's expert breathing techniques, dietary recommendations, and seasonally balanced workouts. Now you can, too!

Highly recommend this book

Highly recommend this book
I was first introduced to ayurvedic principles through Dr. Vasant Lad back in the 1980"s - Currently I am a Health and P.E. teacher to High school students and have been using this book in my classroom since its publication. I highly recommend this book to all people! Dr. Douillard uses ancient principles of ayurveda and places them into modern times for the modern day fitness enthusiast. I wish all public school P.E. teachers would use this as a guide for all young people!

Been in the Army over 10 years now, and I won't run without nose breathing now. Actually got this book years ago, and forgot to write the review. I'm horrible at pacing, or I was until I had my nose to keep me under control. I nose breathe during PT tests too, and I'm still faster than almost everyone. I was like 4/90ish people the last time we did a unit run (4x36 for those who know). Email John with any questions, he'll answer, but get the book firsr.

One of my all-time favorite books!

Full Disclosure: I recently interviewed Dr. John Douillard for our Inspire Nation Show.

This book's an oldie, but more than a goodie, it was and still IS way ahead of it's time. Ideas in this revolutionary book by Dr. Douillard are now being proven by science, such as the incredible benefits of nasal breathing. And his concepts for matching sports with season-type, are spot on.

For anyone who want's to improve at their sport, keep from getting injured, or perform at their best, I can't recommend it enough (and I'm a running coach and professional athlete with over 25 years of experience). And if you have a child into sports, OR struggling in PE, then this is a must read!

John Doullard's Body, Mind, and Sport is excellent for exposure to basic yoga, breathing techniques, and overall well-being. In it, he persuasively and clearly describes the benefits of nasal breathing by comparing performance levels during "conventional" and "body, mind, sport" training methods followed by an explanation of how to apply the techniques.

His methods allow you to ascertain your body type, learn the best times to train, relearn how to train, and most importantly to enjoy it. Personally, I don't feel right breathing through my mouth anymore and I've seen my recreational cycling levels improve drastically by following John's prescribed method.

However, for all the benefits, it is relatively difficult to apply the techniques. That may be because someone isn't actively showing you what to do, rather you are reading a description and trying to imitate it. It is especially hard to gauge your comfort level (he often says "Let comfort be your guide") when it comes to sports that require rapid bursts of energy like tennis or basketball.

To conclude:
- The techniques are effective and (coming from a family with background in yoga) and described very well for someone who is unfamiliar with yoga. A must read for anyone with personal wellness in mind!

- When it comes to applying the material, don't give up! At first it will be very difficult to understand what you are supposed to do or feel like.

- Attending a yoga class may help you with the breathing techniques. If that doesn't appeal to you, keep trying on a treadmill or exercise bike where it is easy to push yourself, but back off if you body isn't ready.

Good luck!

Simply phenomenal. Sometimes it really is best to go back and review those most basic assumptions of life in order to go forward in a more powerful way.
And that is what this author does.
Read, ponder, and prepare to become a far more wise and powerful you.
Yeah, that good.

Was skeptical at first about getting this book, and being that it’s so un conventional to the no pain no gain stigma, had to give it a try. Have actually seen surprising results in as little as a week. Highly recommended and looking forward to staying consistent ans also getting into meditation. Thank you

This is the one book that has influenced me in my life more than any book,
b/c its really explains how you, on any level can approach training and life.
I am educated in chiropractic, which gives me an increased understanding of the human body and interactions.
A must read for those who are willing to look at signs and facts besides the medical approach, of course with it.
Its also a fine guide to help you wander into the world of gastronomy, its not all black and white. Its a lot of emphasis
on Ayurvedic traditions.
You want to natural, this is a book that can push you in your right direction.
Remember to breath with your nose!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for body

Excellent resource for body, mind and health. A few reasons why I love this book is because it has given me a whole new outlook on eating and exercising. The two biggest impacts this book has had on me are the eating and exercising parts. In terms of eating, Mr. Douillard suggests eating the biggest meal of the day between 12 to 2 when a person's digestive fire is the strongest. I've been eating a hearty lunch and a lighter supper now for two months which has seen a tremendous improvement in my digestion not to mention that my sleep is far better because supper is lighter fare. Through this book I have learned a different way of breathing while exercising. The book details how breathing deeply only through the nose will improve performance and endurance. At first it's a bit difficult to do and I had to slow down a lot until I got used to it. Once I got the hang of it, I feel energized and refreshed after exercise instead of fatigued and sore. I am constantly re-reading sections of the book on great tips of how to have steady and good performance throughout the day by making adjustments of what to eat and the best time of the day to exercise according to one's body type.
