Publisher Description

New York Times bestselling author Douglas Adams and zoologist Mark Carwardine take off around the world in search of exotic, endangered creatures.

Join them as they encounter the animal kingdom in its stunning beauty, astonishing variety, and imminent peril: the giant Komodo dragon of Indonesia, the helpless but loveable Kakapo of New Zealand, the blind river dolphins of China, the white rhinos of Zaire, the rare birds of Mauritius island in the Indian Ocean. Hilarious and poignant—as only Douglas Adams can be—Last Chance to See is an entertaining and arresting odyssey through the Earth’s magnificent wildlife galaxy.

Praise for Last Chance to See

“Lively, sharply satirical, brilliantly written . . . shows how human care can undo what human carelessness has wrought.”—The Atlantic

“These authors don’t hesitate to present the alarming facts: More than 1,000 species of animals (and plants) become extinct every year. . . . Perhaps Adams and Carwardine, with their witty science, will help prevent such misadventures in the future.”—Boston Sunday Herald

“Very funny and moving . . . The glimpses of rare fauna seem to have enlarged [Adams’s] thinking, enlivened his world; and so might the animals do for us all, if we were to help them live.”—The Washington Post Book World

“[Adams] invites us to enter into a conspiracy of laughter and caring.”Los Angeles Times

“Amusing . . . thought-provoking . . . Its details on the heroic efforts being made to save these animals are inspirational.”The New York Times Book Review

Amazing emotional rollercoaster

This book was a wonderful read! It combines the comedy of Douglas Adams with the tragedy of mass extinction. I think it’s especially emotional now that thirty years later, we can see the results of the conservation work described in this book. Excitingly, some of the animals have been making a strong comeback! But sadly, others have disappeared. Still as relevant today as it was when it was published, if not more so!

Where are the pictures?

First off, I love this book. I own the physical book and have read it several times. The writing is wonderful--as you no doubt expect, if you've read Douglas Adams before. But be warned: none of the beautiful pictures from the book were included in the version. Very frustrating. 5 stars for the writing, 0 for the laziness of the publisher. The average would be 2.5 stars. I ought to round down because no mention is made, and I think that's deceitful. But it's Adams. 3 stars. Everyone should read this book. But until they put the pictures back in, this isn't the form in which to read it.

Excellent Book; Where's the Pictures?

I adore Douglas Adams completely. From the many varied versions of his Hitchhiker series to Dirk Gentley and the Doctor, I have read, re read and re re read and always will again. The man was a master storyteller and I only wish there was more to read. Last Chance to See is no different and deserves a 5-star rating. Alas, there are no pictures in this iBook. As I was reading on a device it was little work to highlight and search the web for pictures of the animals and places (even found a pic of Arab w/kakapo). However for the price it is deeply disappointing not to see the material that would be included in a hard copy.
