The Novel Habits of Happiness (Isabel Dalhousie Book 10) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 2,677 ratings

The insatiably curious Edinburgh philosopher and amateur sleuth Isabel Dalhousie returns, taking on a case unlike any she’s had before—this one with paranormal implications—in the eagerly anticipated new installment of Alexander McCall Smith’s beloved and best-selling series.

Through a mutual acquaintance, Isabel is introduced to a six-year-old boy who has been experiencing vivid recollections of a past life, which include a perfect description of an island off the coast of Scotland and a house on the island where he claims to have lived. When the boy’s mother asks Isabel to investigate, Isabel naturally feels inclined to help, and so she, her husband, Jamie, and their son, Charlie, set off for the island. To their great surprise, they actually locate the house that the boy described, which leads to more complicated questions, as Isabel’s desire to find rational explanations comes up against the uncanny mystery unfolding before her. It’s an extraordinarily delicate situation that will require all of her skills, as both sleuth and philosopher, to solve.

Back home, as she begins to prepare the next issue of the
Review of Applied Ethics, Isabel confronts a threat to her professional well-being in the form of two visiting academics—Lettuce and Dove—who she fears will be a destabilizing influence on her cozy perch in enlightened Edinburgh.

But no matter the trials she faces, Isabel is blissfully content in her personal life, which is centered on her young son and devoted husband. Readers will be filled with happiness as they once again spend time with their beloved heroine and the people she holds dear.

Review

“Isabel Dalhousie’s satisfying return. . . . Edinburgh’s favorite philosopher/sleuth is back, this time helping a frantic mom whose son keeps talking about his previous life. Plot twists keep you reading (maybe the boy’s claims aren’t so crazy after all . . .), but it’s Isabel’s musings on duty and parenthood that linger.” —People Magazine

“A stimulating thinking-person’s read, seeming light on the surface but actually going deep. . . . This is a love story. Not the conventional kind, a boy-meets-girl romance; rather, it’s a novel about love—love of life, love of home and homeland, love of partner and family, love of fellow humans.” —
New York Journal of Books

“Isabel Dalhousie philosophizes the way some people drink. There is nothing that she won’t contemplate, analyze or nitpick, from meerkats in the zoo to the difference between a good submarine (the crew doesn’t swear or drink) and a bad submarine which of course must be nuclear.” —
The Washington Times

“No writer makes the philosophical life as inviting and cozy as McCall Smith does in his episodic novels featuring Isabel Dalhousie. . . . The real substance of this charming series lies in Isabel’s thoughtful observations dn the interactions among a large cast of characters.” —
Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Praise for the Isabel Dalhousie series

“Isabel Dalhousie is a force to be reckoned with.”
—USA Today

“The literary equivalent of herbal tea and a cozy fire . . . Invites readers into a world of kindness, gentility and creature comforts . . . McCall Smith’s Scotland is well worth future visits.”
—The New York Times

“Isabel Dalhousie is such good company, it’s hard to believe she’s fictional. You finish [each] installment greedily looking forward to more.”
—Newsweek

“A world where humor is gentle, suffering is acknowledged but not foregrounded and efforts to do good are usually rewarded. It’s a wonderful place to visit, even if we don’t get to live there.”
—The Washington Post

Alexander McCall Smith is one of the world’s most prolific and most popular authors. His career has been a varied one: for many years he was a professor of Medical Law and worked in universities in the United Kingdom and abroad. Then, after the publication of his highly successful 'No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency' series, which has sold over twenty million copies, he devoted his time to the writing of fiction and has seen his various series of books translated into over forty-six languages and become bestsellers through the world. These include the Scotland Street novels, first published as a serial novel in The Scotsman, the Isabel Dalhousie novels, the Von Igelfeld series, and the Corduroy Mansions series, novels which started life as a delightful (but challenging to write) cross-media serial, written on the website of the Telegraph Media Group. This series won two major cross-media awards - Association of Online Publishers Digital Publishing Award 2009 for a Cross Media Project and the New Media Age award.

In addition to these series, Alexander writes stand-alone books. 2014 sees publication of three new novels which fall into this area: 'The Forever Girl'; 'Fatty O’Leary’s Dinner Party'; and 'Emma' – a reworking of the classic Jane Austen novel. This year there will also be a stunning book on Edinburgh, 'A Work of Beauty: Alexander McCall Smith’s Edinburgh'. Earlier stand alone novels include 'La’s Orchestra Saves the World' and 'Trains and Lovers: A Hearts Journey'.

Alexander is also the author of collections of short stories, academic works, and over thirty books for children. He has received numerous awards for his writing, including the British Book Awards Author of the Year Award in 2004 and a CBE for service to literature in 2007. He holds honorary doctorates from nine universities in Europe and North America. In March of 2011 he received an award from the President of Botswana for his services through literature to that country.

Alexander McCall Smith lives in Edinburgh. He is married to a doctor and has two daughters.

Reading this author is like coming upon a lovely green meadow in the midst of a dense and entangled forest through which passage is difficult and frightening.
He is one of perhaps the lasts writers who knows how to discuss the great issues with people and writing that is expansive and when needed detailed or while weaving the story of the lives of people who embody the issues and the desire to understand life and why we are here and what is our motivational basis and response to others while we carve out our own personal philosophy.

This installment bring me to the German language the ever present background of one of the most beautiful cities in the world an reincarnation and by default the issue of faith.

But this is no dry preachy book, it is peopled by real people who are able to talk to each other without the hate and propaganda that has taken these subjects captive.
There is little Charlie and Elizabeth ,(the moral philosopher) and Jamie the archtype of the beautiful manly but gentle man.

With a deft hand he sows the seeds of reflection for his readers on subjects that are both timely and in need of more balanced and intelligent and mutually respectful such as seen in the relationship of the Housekeeper Grace who is a member of Spiritualist group and Elizabeth who is off course this widely read and respected Moral Philosopher.

This is a wonderful and rich read and how he keeps his standards so high I don't know but it might have something to do with a walk and a cup of coffee and one of the many wonderful coffee bars like Cat's delicatessen.

I loved the book even when I did not agree with much of the authors views as seen through the people in this world. This is a tribute to what philosophy is and can be and not the more easily fallen into sophist rhetoric of everything from advertising to political rants.

God bless this man for his mind and his books they are a joy and a treasure

I enjoy meeting Isabel in her world again and again, so this book has been a pleasure to read for the characters in their environment.
The mystery surrounding the little boy is not very important in the course of the story, it seems to me.
One thing about the books bothers me a little…in the early books Isabel is in her early forties (six years younger than Grace, who is in her late forties, it is said) and there is a large age gap with Jamie, now, after ten books, she is in her late thirties. Is that somewhat sloppy editing or does Mr. McCall Smith feel that women moving towards their later forties are less interesting to write about and therefore he has made her increasingly younger? Considering that Charlie is four, at least six years must have gone by since book one.

This book is thought-provoking as usual but has added delightful descriptions of Scotland’s geography and Isabel’s relationships. So very heartwarming.

I have loved this series from the time I read the first book. Of course, in my opinion, McCall Smith can do no wrong. All of his books are fully entertaining. Yet there's something about this series that I find very comforting. With so many horrors in the world, these books inspire coziness: I light my wood stove, settle down with the book, an afghan over my legs (and eventually cats also settling in all around me), and escape into the lovely Edinburgh world of Isabel Dalhousie. She is an independently wealthy philosopher and the owner/editor of a quarterly philosophy review journal. Isabel never flaunts her wealth, but is privately generous with many charities. She also likes to help people who seem to need her help. As a philosopher, she believes it is her responsibility to assist anyone who comes within her realm. Thus, she tends to get herself into predicaments that at times are a little dangerous but that mostly turn out simply awkward or very satisfying. As the series progresses, characters from previous books reappear, some of them not very nice. But Isabel's humorous view of the world and her constant ruminating about what's right and what should happen provide a wonderful, sometimes laugh-out-loud enjoyment. Each time a new book comes out, I read the full series in order. This way I can delay the fun of reading the newest book. This latest is #10.

This is the tenth book in a series about a fictional philosopher, Isabel Dalhousie, living in Edinburgh with her husband and young child. I am fond of Isabel (though not as fond as I am of Precious Ramotswe, the central character in McCall Smith's entirely lovely No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series), and I found this a gentle, agreeable, soothing read. Difficulties arise and are largely resolved . Through Isabel's eyes, we see people with all their foibles and find sympathy with them anyhow.

One thing seemed slightly discordant: Isabel is portrayed as a loving, happy mother, yet there are few occasions when we see her interacting with her young son -- instead he's with his father, or asleep, or at nursery school, or playing separately.

My favorite moment was the resolution of a thread about a paper titled "The Ethical World of My Mother," a resolution I'd anticipated in its broad strokes, but which nonetheless strongly moved me. McCall Smith has a knack for showing the importance of everyday kindness, of the connections between people, of goodness, and he does so without veering into moralizing or cloying sentimentality.

About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying. The reviews are not scholarly, but just indicate my reaction as a reader, reading being my addiction. I am miserly with 5-star reviews; 4 stars means I liked a book very much; 3 stars means I liked it; 2 stars means I didn't like it (though often the 2-star books are very popular with other readers and/or are by authors whose other work I've loved).

I have read many novels by Alexander McCall Smith. The plots are beautifully constructed. They contain lessons of truth, and reveal these in a way that brings happiness.
This is particularly true of the Isabel Dalhousie Novels.

A recommander absolument !

Like all the previous novels I've read in the series this is a thought provoking combination of narratives. I suppose you either like this stuff or hate it; I happen to like it for reasons I'm not too sure of. Maybe the consideration, the gentleness...?
