Anna and Bennett were never supposed to meet: she lives in 1995 Chicago and he lives in 2012 San Francisco. But Bennett has the unique ability to travel through time and space, which brings him into Anna's life, and with him a new world of adventure and possibility.

As their relationship deepens, the two face the reality that time may knock Bennett back to where he belongs, even as a devastating crisis throws everything they believe into question. Against a ticking clock, Anna and Bennett are forced to ask themselves how far they can push the bounds of fate, what consequences they can bear in order to stay together, and whether their love can stand the test of time.

Fresh, exciting, and deeply romantic, Time Between Us is a stunning, spellbinding debut novel from an extraordinary new voice.

I don't even know where to start. It's been a while since I was speechless from a book. Tamara Ireland Stone is coming to my town for a signing soon, and so I picked up her book. I had no idea what a treasure I was buying!

Time Between Us by Tamara Ireland Stone focuses on Anna, a girl who lives in the year 1995, who meets a strange boy named Bennett. He appears and disappears one day when she is running at a track, but when she meets him again at school the next day, it's as if he never knew her in the first place. This starts a romantic adventure of a love that spans time, space, and every other dimension.

I don't want to say too much more about the plot, because it's incredible to get to experience it all firsthand. The writing is gorgeous, and it took all of my willpower to put it down last night and not stay up all night finishing it. The characters are well drawn, and it's hard not to like Anna. She's a great main character, and Bennett is intriguing. Her parents are briefly mentioned, but in a few deft strokes, you can tell what their personalities are like. Emma, as the best friend, was my other favorite-- and I can hear her Brit accent in my head. The plot races along at a perfect pace, and while I'm not usually one for description, it takes a central role in this novel. I can imagine all the beautiful places in my head so effortlessly with the way Stone describes them. I can feel the sand between my toes, and the chalk as I dust it on my hands before hitching myself up on the first crease of a rock face.

There are certain plot twists that I was doubtful about, but it all comes full circle as all loose ends are tied up in a way that makes sense and is completely believable (in this novel's reality). The ending is spot on-- usually difficult for most authors. Every move that Stone has made is right, and this book has currently stolen my heart as one of my favorite reads this year.

Overall, a gorgeously told novel with terrific characters, scenery, and pacing. Stone is one of the most talented authors that I have discovered this year, and I can't wait to pick up the next gem she writes!

Time travel. Hello, awesome.

Honestly, I was nervous about this one because time travel –as awesome as it sounds– also seems extremely difficult to comprehend. Granted, I haven’t read too many time traveling books so I don’t have much to compare too but Time Between Us was so well written, fascinating and just beautiful and I couldn’t get enough!

After encountering a mysterious boy –who disappears– one morning while on a jog, Anna’s life is thrown into a tails spin. Bennett, the new boy at school, is the one she saw that morning. Although he denies being there, Anna is sure of it and continues to be intrigued by Bennett. After a robbery gone wrong, Anna learns about Bennett’s ability and the two grow closer and start a relationship.

The writing was beautiful; I was drawn from page one in complete awe. There is so much about this book to love. The sweet, butterfly inducing romance, the complex yet fascinating concept of time travel. The small mysteries behind particular events. There were a few times that I had to re read something because it seemed like it went right over my head (a scene in particular where Bennett is walking Anna home)– but for the most part, it was pretty easy to understand. The “rules” for traveling were explained in detail but not to which was overwhelming. To me, this is a “small details” kind of book. You MUST pay attention to the smallest things. They are crucial in understanding…a lot.

Anna is such a strong and like-able girl. I do think her acceptance of the time traveling was pretty quick– then again, she had all the proof she needed. She’s loyal, loving and just wants to experience life outside of her proverbial box. The relationship between Anna and Bennett is one of my favorites. As you see them fall in love and grow, you can’t help but get attached to the two and hope they can overcome all their obstacles.. Bennett is so good to Anna. Knowing about her dreams to travel; he takes her to places she could only dream of. He did everything in his power to make her happy, even against his OWN wishes and you can’t help but admire that. He’s sensitive and protective and I love that he gave Anna the choice to continue their relationship.. You have this feeling of dread almost the entire book because it just doesn’t seem plausible that their relationship could ever work. Not to mention, these words from Bennett;

“I don’t stay…anywhere. I visit. I observe. I leave. I don’t ever stay.”

Cue heartbreak, yes?

After one event in particular; I was really hoping they wouldn’t change what happened. The butterfly effect and all that. Something small or huge can change when doing their “do-over” and I was pretty anxious after they did. And not at all surprised at the outcome. Bennett caved too quickly too. I get he wants to make Anna happy and do what he can for her– it just.. I don’t know. Maybe I am more upset about Anna trying to abuse this gift?

There are a few things I wished we had a little more explanations on. After finishing, my mind was whirling with questions that weren’t answered.

Overall- Time between us is going on my favorites shelf. So unique, complex and fascinating, I can’t wait for book two, Time After Time. I HIGHLY recommend this.

I described Time Between Us on Twitter as the literary equivalent of a warm cup of tea on a cold winter's night.

It's charming, beautiful and I can guarantee that you'll feel better after reading it. It's basically balm for the soul. I strongly believe that there needs to be more books like this out there.

(Publishers, please take note!)

I feel like a lot of the other reviews have covered all of the main points/events/plotlines of the book, so let me focus on the relationship.

I like the fact that Anna is clever, strong and looks out for herself. This is not a girl who depends on guys to help get things done. This is a girl who knows what she wants in life, and goes for it.

With Bennett, they have a relationship that's based on mutual respect and understanding. They're partners in every sense of the world. However, they still remain completely focused and true to their own individuality at the same time.

Even at a pivotal juncture in the story, Anna has the option of choosing whether she wants to wait around for Bennett, or if she wants to be brave and take what she wants from life - with the full understanding that Bennett may not be there to see her at the end of it.

She chooses herself. And I love that about her.

The one thing that I didn't like, was that there wasn't a lot of clarification about how Bennett found his way back to Anna in the end.

Anna goes to Mexico, and Bennett is just... there. Okay. But how? He sort of explains how he made it happen, but the explanation was just a little too hand-waving for me. Thus, I must deduct a star for the logical inconsistency.

However, I have read in other reviews (and have gleaned through Twitter) that there's a sequel in the works, which will hopefully give me some of the answers I need!

This is very much The Time Traveller's Wife for young adults, and it's mostly well done and engaging. The story starts in 2011, but quickly moves to 1995, where Anna is about to fall for mysterious newcomer Bennett. It's not long before she finds out about Bennett's time travelling gift, which brings her amazing new adventures but also threatens to tear them apart. The time jumps are well plotted and it never gets too confusing or convoluted, and it's an involving story. Bennett is a likeable character, but I did find the character of Anna a little irritating at times. The ending is also a little bit bland, but for fans of romance with a little touch of the supernatural, this is definitely a recommended read.

Anna and Bennett were never supposed to meet: She lives in 1995 Chicago and he lives in 2012 San Francisco.
Fortunately he has the power to travel in time and space.
When I read the blurb I thought this was going to be a load of rubbish. I was wrong.
This is a sensitively written love story with a deal of twists and turns. Both the main characters and the supporting characters are well drawn and the story rolls at a pace that makes this book difficult to put down. I'm not the target audience for the story - wrong sex, wrong age - but nevertheless I admired the craftsmanship that's gone into this tale.
Highly recommended!

Chicago, 1995: There is a new boy at school. Anna is intrigued and attracted by Bennett, and he seems to be quite drawn to her. A series of bizarre coincidences bring them together. Why does he have such long, shaggy hair, though? And sometimes his behaviour is a bit strange. As they get to know each other, Bennett reveals his secret – time travel. He is a teenager in 2011, and was just a baby in 1995. Bennett never planned to stay permanently in Anna’s era. He has come back for a reason, and when he has done what he set out to, he means to return to his own time, so the developing romance between them poses a difficult dilemma.

I am fascinated by time travel and I also enjoy school stories of all kinds and historical novels set in the quite recent past. This young adult romance is cleverly imagined and I really enjoyed reading it. The book is American and as I was a teenager in the 1980s, her time doesn’t really seem historical, just a bit different. Occasionally I would notice something and think about how things have changed between 1995 and 2012. I would be interested to see what a present day 16 year old would make of story featuring teenage life with no mobile phones, music on CDs and Walkmans and far fewer computers and internet access.

Recommended for teenage girls past and present.

I really enjoyed this read and I felt the comparison to The Time Traveller's Wife is spot on.

For me the driving force of this novel is the scenes that feature both Anna and Bennett together. I loved seeing their relationship grow as the book developed and seeing the way in which they grow as a couple despite all the odds stacked up against them. I loved the innocence of their relationship and seeing that new young love in its early stages.

I also loved the relationnship anna has with her best friend. I liked seeing that bond between two girls ... to be fair I'm probably jealous never having a girly best friend as a teenager!

The only thing I can complain about is I felt the end of this book was rather rushed which I felt was a shame because the rest of the book was so well paced throughout.

A fab debut novel and such a relief to get a book which is a stand alone and not a trilogy!

4.0 out of 5 stars A YA Time Traveller romance that has crossover appeal

Although targetted at the YA market this is an engaging story that is very readable for all ages. Anna is the narrator and it is into her life that Bennett arrives as a new student at her school; a newcomer who has a secret and she seems to have seen fleetingly before. The blurb tells you that part of his secret is an ability to time travel but as their worlds collide and the relationship between them develops we find there is more to his arrival in her life.
The story has some great twists and the central characters draw you in with the 'romantic elements'are touchingly told.I found myself more engrossed than I thought I would be; the style is very easy, natural and you will find yourself struggling to put the book down - cliched I know but very true for me!!
The wider cast of characters adds to the story and the inventive, supportive Spanish teacher definitely makes me smile - I found it very easy to visualise this becoming a popular YA film as the story has warmth and humour.
The book would appeal to early teens onwards but as a mum of teens I would also recommend to my peers/friends.
