You don't have to be white to have a white mind.
What is a white mind? As Anne Wilson Schaef learned during her travels throughout the world among Native Peoples, anyone raised in modern Western society or by Western culture can have a white mind. White minds are trapped in a closed system of thinking that sees life in black and white, either/or terms; they are hierarchical and mechanistic; they see nature as a force to be tamed and people as objects to be controlled with no regard for the future.
This worldview is not shared by most Native Peoples, and in this provocative book, Anne Wilson Schaef shares the richness poured out to her by Native Americans, Aborigines, Africans, Maoris, and others. In the words of Native Peoples themselves, we come to understand Native ideas about our earth, spirituality, family, work, loneliness, and change. For in every area of our lives we have the capacity to transcend our white minds--we simply need to listen with open hearts and open minds to other voices, other perceptions, other cultures.
Anne Wilson Schaef often heard Elders from a wide variety of Native Peoples say, "Our legends tell us that a time will come when our wisdom and way of living will be necessary to save the planet, and that time is now." Anyone ready to move from feeling separate to a profound sense of connectedness, from the personal to the global, will find the path in this mind-expanding, deeply spiritual book.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

From the world-renowned author of such international bestsellers as MEDITATIONS FOR WOMEN WHO DO TOO MUCH (over 2 million copies in print) and MEDITATIONS FOR PEOPLE WHO (MAY) WORRY TOO MUCH, Anne Wilson Schaef has crafted a meditation book based on ancient wisdom.

Wilson Schaef shares the richness of truth poured out to her by Native Americans, Australian Aboriginals, Africans, Maori, and others who still honor the old ways. In daily meditations, she gives us the Elders' own words about fear, time, possessiveness, family, work, loneliness, change, intimacy, and many other subjects, along with her own personal reflections. The result is a wonderful book of meditations and a healing, provocative, deeply spiritual companion.

Be sure to look for Anne Wilson Schaef's new book, LIVING IN PROCESS: BASIC TRUTHS FOR LIVING THE PATH OF THE SOUL available in November of 1998. In it, Anne explores her evolutionary action philosophy that guides and informs all of her healing work.

This book is AMAZING. Don't skip the foreword - lots of good information there.

Already, this book is changing my mindset and challenging me to think outside myself. Beautifully written, a hidden gem among books.

I am really enjoying reading this book. I especially like that the author kept the stories true to nature and shares what she learned from them. I Highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to embrace this culture, like myself, I am white on the outside, but have a heart for my native ancestors that is very much a part of my journey. It is who I am, remembering who I am has been an awakening like non other. I feel more alive and accepting of this world which I live in. It is a very simple reading with deep wisdom if one is willing to embrace it. I am so glad to have this book in my hands. A treasure worth having.

I found the wisdom espoused in this book to be true, but not particularly meaningful. It just seemed like a lot of no-brainer information that to me was not particularly interesting. I tried really hard to get through the book, but couldn't even make it half way. It just didn't hold my interest.

An excellent resource for daily reflections on how Western Cultural biases can destroy spiritual Balance. It includes wisdom and advice from Native Cultures around the world.

This is a lovely book. I received it as a gift years ago and still open it often to see what the wisdom of the day is. It's comforting to know that there are kindred spirits out there who value the earth and all of it's inhabitants. Bought this copy for a gift and the couple we gave it to love it too!

This is a wonderful gift to White Minds (non-indigenous people). The wisdom of people who have been in place for thousands of years is essential to our future. Each daily bit of wisdom is thought-provoking.

It's a nice book more like a daily agenda for wisdoms ..... it's probably something that one can read on a coffee break

The definition of "Native" is a rather liberal one. One is led to expect we are talking about Indigenous North Americans and perhaps those from other parts of the Americas but the author includes folks who, although might be considered wise, aren't really Indigenous by many definitions. And the quotes aren't particularly deep. You will only scratch a very superficial surface here if you want to learn something about Indigenous worldviews.
