Started reading The Charlemagne Pursuit while en route to Germany. The detail of the book inspired me to visit the Cathedral at Aachen (Dome) while overseas. During the tour, the guide lead us up the circular staircase - exactly as described in the book. In fact, almost all of the details were dead-on.
During a series of business meetings during that same visit to Germany, I met an individual who had worked in the US Navy as a member of a research submarine, complete with undercarriage and manipulating arms - yep, it was NR-1. Got a chance to see some archival footage from the NR-1 'decomissioning' in 2008.
Dan Brown could only hope to write as enjoyable a book as this - the first 180 pages of the Da Vinci Code were pure tedium (immediately after slogging through that one, I had to sink my teeth into a Wilbur Smith just to regain my faith in the genre of the historical novel). Steve Berry's research is excellent, and his style is suggestive enough to keep the reader riveted. Good job, Mr. Berry.
