For my taste, there's far too much time spent on politics and descriptions of clothing (and driving, oddly. Every scene seems to start with an endlessly detailed description of a drive to wherever the scene is actually going to take place...). The characters are good and the mysteries are engaging, but not on the same level as his space operas, and not as hard-boiled or tight as I'd like a detective novel to be...
