A compelling if unfinished story. While short, this essay manages to touch on a lot of pressing concerns - both regarding high level athletes and society more broadly. It is encouraging to see Roberto Nelson - over time and with proper guidance - make mature decisions and react remarkably well in the face of adversity. This is one of those most engaging of sports stories, where athletic achievement is only a relatively minor part of greater excellence. Due to this essay I will certainly be following Roberto Nelson's career from here on out and wish him only the best. I've been thinking about buying Dohrmann's full-length book "Play Their Hearts Out" for some time now, and this essay (as well as the included preview of the book) has convinced me that I should do so sooner rather than later.
About the author
George Dohrmann is a senior writer and investigative reporter at Sports Illustrated. He is the author of Play Their Hearts Out, winner of the PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sportswriting and the Award for Excellence in the Coverage of Youth Sports. In 2000, while working at the St. Paul Pioneer Press, he won a Pulitzer Prize for a series of stories that uncovered a college basketball team’s academic fraud. Dohrmann lives in San Francisco with his family.
