About this ebook

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. . . .

When the Emperor and his notorious apprentice, Darth Vader, find themselves stranded in the middle of insurgent action on an inhospitable planet, they must rely on each other, the Force, and their own ruthlessness to prevail.

“It appears things are as you suspected, Lord Vader. We are indeed hunted.”

Anakin Skywalker, Jedi Knight, is just a memory. Darth Vader, newly anointed Sith Lord, is ascendant. The Emperor’s chosen apprentice has swiftly proven his loyalty to the dark side. Still, the history of the Sith Order is one of duplicity, betrayal, and acolytes violently usurping their Masters—and the truest measure of Vader’s allegiance has yet to be taken. Until now.

On Ryloth, a planet crucial to the growing Empire as a source of slave labor and the narcotic known as “spice,” an aggressive resistance movement has arisen, led by Cham Syndulla, an idealistic freedom fighter, and Isval, a vengeful former slave. But Emperor Palpatine means to control the embattled world and its precious resources—by political power or firepower—and he will be neither intimidated nor denied. Accompanied by his merciless disciple, Darth Vader, he sets out on a rare personal mission to ensure his will is done.

For Syndulla and Isval, it’s the opportunity to strike at the very heart of the ruthless dictatorship sweeping the galaxy. And for the Emperor and Darth Vader, Ryloth becomes more than just a matter of putting down an insurrection: When an ambush sends them crashing to the planet’s surface, where inhospitable terrain and an army of resistance fighters await them, they will find their relationship tested as never before. With only their lightsabers, the dark side of the Force, and each other to depend on, the two Sith must decide if the brutal bond they share will make them victorious allies or lethal adversaries.

I really felt like the book was just okay. At times a little poorly written. Dark Disciple was fantastic and the other new Star Wars books just dwarf this one. Vader was written well, but obvious real life political issues were forced into the book and just felt silly, or like a "oh by the way" footnote" the story could have done without. I mean, the fact a character is a lesbian is forced into the story but really has nothing to do with the story. It just seemed forced and stupid.

I wonder if an editor ever looked at this book. Do you really need to word every action the same way? Maybe break out a thesaurus? It could have been one of my favorites considering the story line. I LOVE star wars and the Free Ryloth movement is very intriguing subject matter, but the writing left something to be desired. The use of "apex predator" 4 times in one paragraph just made me sigh.....so much potential, but so hard to get past the writing style.

I would've enjoyed this book if it had been more about its title and less about Mary Sue and Gary Stu Twi'leks and a fat, old Moff, whose only reason for being in this novel was for SJW quota. Plus, if I read one more eating metaphor when it came to distance closing/creating, I was going to scream. I did scream with the lekku over usage. The author doesn't understand the sick cruelty of the Emperor, so he takes care to avoid giving him any meaningful role in this story. Palpatine would've slaughtered the village via Vader and made Ist watch. He would've captured Cham and made Ist watch in a private demonstration as he showed her that even Vader wasn't as much of a god as he is, using force lightning to roast him, illustrating that they never had even a snowball's chance in hell of killing him. Then he may or may not kill her, just for cackles. Mr Kemp, stick to the lightside story telling.
