THE NO. 1 LADIES’ DETECTIVE AGENCY - Book 5

Fans around the world adore the best-selling No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series and its proprietor, Precious Ramotswe, Botswana’s premier lady detective. In this charming series, Mma  Ramotswe—with help from her loyal associate, Grace Makutsi—navigates her cases and her personal life with wisdom, good humor, and the occasional cup of tea.

Still engaged to the estimable Mr J.L.B. Matekoni, Mma Ramotswe understands that she should not put too much pressure on him, as he has other concerns, especially a hair-raising request from the ever persuasive Mma Potokwane, matron of the orphan farm. Besides Mma Ramotswe herself has weighty matters on her mind. She has been approached by a wealthy lady to check up on several suitors. Are these men interested in the lady or just her money? This may be a difficult case, but it's just the kind of problem Mma Ramotswe likes and she is, as we know, a very intuitive lady.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Precious Ramotswe is on the case again in this delightful fifth installment in the bestselling No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, this time assisting the self-made founder of a chain of hairdressing salons who wants to unearth the real intentions of her four suitors, each possibly more interested in her money than her heart. As fans know, though, sleuthing takes second place to folksy storytelling in McCall Smith's wry novels. This time around, Mma Ramotswe is distracted by her long-prolonged engagement to Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, Gaborone's best mechanic; it seems she will never be married, despite her fiancé's honorable intentions. He installs an extra large seatbelt in her car to keep her safe (she is quite comfortable with her "traditional build," despite the new, slender fashion of modern woman), but an altercation with another mechanic and the prospect of a charity parachute jump keep his mind off matrimony. A drive for decency motivates Mma Ramotswe and her friends-among them Mma Potokwani, the imperious matron of the local orphan farm, and Mma Makutsi, assistant at the Ladies' Detective Agency and founder of the Kalahari Typing School for Men-and Smith's talent is in portraying this moral code in a manner that is always engaging. As readers will appreciate, Mma Ramotswe solves her cases-more questions of character, really, than of criminal behavior-in good time. Traditionally built ladies living in the African heat don't tend to hurry, and, at the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, there's always time for another cup of tea.

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School–In this fifth installment about the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, Mma Ramotswe and her assistant, Mma Makutsi, tackle the case of a wealthy woman who wants to know which of her suitors is only after her money. On a personal note, Mma Ramotswe worries over when her fiancé will set a date for their marriage, and more urgently, who will replace him in performing the parachute jump, a charity event to raise money for the Orphan Farm. The charm of this series set in Botswana is its wealth of very real characters. By Western standards they may be economically poor, but in terms of pride, love, and happiness, they are rich indeed. Readers will be seduced by the beauty of the land and intrigued by local customs. They will learn about drought and irrigation, about growing pumpkins, braiding hair, and dealing with poisonous snakes. The cases Mma Ramotswe handles are more about solving problems than crimes. Her behavior is governed by good manners, politeness, and honesty, and her favorite tool in the art of detecting is tea, preferably Bush Tea. The book has lots of humor, and optimism softens the tough realities of life. It also has a delightful surprise ending.–Sheila Janega, Fairfax County Public Library, Great Falls, VA

Alexander McCall Smith is one of the world’s most prolific and most popular authors. His career has been a varied one: for many years he was a professor of Medical Law and worked in universities in the United Kingdom and abroad. Then, after the publication of his highly successful 'No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency' series, which has sold over twenty million copies, he devoted his time to the writing of fiction and has seen his various series of books translated into over forty-six languages and become bestsellers through the world. These include the Scotland Street novels, first published as a serial novel in The Scotsman, the Isabel Dalhousie novels, the Von Igelfeld series, and the Corduroy Mansions series, novels which started life as a delightful (but challenging to write) cross-media serial, written on the website of the Telegraph Media Group. This series won two major cross-media awards - Association of Online Publishers Digital Publishing Award 2009 for a Cross Media Project and the New Media Age award.

In addition to these series, Alexander writes stand-alone books. 2014 sees publication of three new novels which fall into this area: 'The Forever Girl'; 'Fatty O’Leary’s Dinner Party'; and 'Emma' – a reworking of the classic Jane Austen novel. This year there will also be a stunning book on Edinburgh, 'A Work of Beauty: Alexander McCall Smith’s Edinburgh'. Earlier stand alone novels include 'La’s Orchestra Saves the World' and 'Trains and Lovers: A Hearts Journey'.

Alexander is also the author of collections of short stories, academic works, and over thirty books for children. He has received numerous awards for his writing, including the British Book Awards Author of the Year Award in 2004 and a CBE for service to literature in 2007. He holds honorary doctorates from nine universities in Europe and North America. In March of 2011 he received an award from the President of Botswana for his services through literature to that country.

Alexander McCall Smith lives in Edinburgh. He is married to a doctor and has two daughters.

This is the fifth of a contracted 8 books in the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series. The first book in the series broke out of genre limitations and was as much an astute and charming literary experience as it was a detective's story. The next three books offered more time with the enjoyable protagonist and regular characters in the surprising world of contemporary Botswanna, but they no longer held the surprise of the first book, and the mysteries devolved into simpler puzzle that were more comments on the human condition than challenging plots.

THE FULL CUPBOARD OF LIFE springs back with a lot of the energy of the first book. True, there is only one detective case that gets attention in the plot, plus the mystery of Mr. JLB Matekoni's intentions as Mma Ramotswe's fiancée-will he ever name the wedding date-but this volume buzzes with the character development, gentle humor, cultural backdrop and insight into human ironies that blasted the first book to international attention. There are twist endings to both questions posed to Mma Ramotswe. In the meantime, things are looking up for her associate, Mma Makutsi, whose entrepreneurship has brought her comfort in life though as yet has yielded a love interest, and there is much to be learned about the wiles of Mma Potokwani, the orphanage manager who knows how to get what she needs for her just causes. The author is true to his characters and their world, and works a spell with his graceful prose. The country he describes is astounding.

It's the fifth book in the series; why are you even reading reviews? :)

[. . . ok, ok, if on the off chance this is the first of the series you've considered, go back to The #1 Ladies Detective Agency, buy 'em all!]

Once again, Alexander McCall Smith does not disappoint. Mma Ramotswe is the traditional Botswana lady, full of simple (though never simplistic) insights. I liked #1, fell in love with Tears of the Giraffe, and have not looked back since.

Here's the thing about this series: It's engaging, it's interesting, it evokes Africa so that you feel the hot dust in your throat and the sun on your shoulders and the cool of the shade. It shames most Americans because of our excess and lack of appreciation for something like running water. It reminds us that courtesy and kindness are international and timeless. And always, always, Mma Ramotswe makes an observation that, even though seemingly simple and obvious, makes you say "of course!" and often makes you smile and appreciate things you might otherwise overlook.

I love this series of books by Alexander McCall Smith. This one started out a little slow but soon I was part of the main characters lives and transported to Boswana.

Mma Ramotswe is sitting at her desk in the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency looking out her window. She can see past the acacia trees, over the grass and scrub bush, all the way to the hills which shimmer in a blue haze, and she thinks how beautiful Botswana, her country, truly is.
The rains had been plentiful this year, and that means that the pumpkin crop will abound.
She thinks of the deliciousness of boiled pumpkin or squash with a pat of butter on top accompanied by a slice of Botswana beef. So good!
God has indeed blessed Botswana! When she was a child attending Sunday School she was asked to list God’s blessings on Botswana. Her list included the land, the people who lived on the land, the fat cattle, and the railway line from
Lobatse to Francistown.
There is no ongoing case with which to busy herself right now. Her latest case was a large one, an enquiry into who was embezzling from
a large store, and she had identified the culprit.
Perhaps the mail will contain a letter which will begin the next investigation. Maybe a client will walk in with a question to be answered. Find out what the day brings to the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency when you read The Full Cupboard of Life!

I just recently started the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, and I must confess to being hooked. The stories are fun and interesting, and the characters soon become members of the family. The relative simplicity of these stories is in stark contrast to the complex plots and characters of much of today's detective fiction, and, frankly, it is a real pleasure just to enjoy some good, wholesome episodes set in a different place and not bathed in blood. The references to life and the traditions and culture of Botswana are reminiscent of Tony Hillerman and the adventures of Jim Chee and The Legendary Lieutenant in Navajo country, with Smith giving us a glimpse of what amounts to a different time and place. The time passes pleasantly and quickly in the company of Mma Ramotswe, Mma Makutsi and Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, and life is seldom dull around the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency!

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 8, 2019
I started reading these books few years ago. And have not stopped. I think I have read the whole series 3 times. Even when I come to parts that go on and on. I just skip the part. They are very relaxing books. I really enjoyed them so much.
They made tv series of it few years back. But only few episodes. They nothing like books. But still enjoyable. I couldn't find the full episodes on you tube or anywhere.
Then I found a couple episodes on daily motion... if anybody want watch.

Is there anything better than Precious Ramotswe and her stories? When life throws many things at you, all you need is the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency to give you hope that things will be alright as they usually are at the end of the each book. Another brilliant, chuckling book from Alexander McCall Smith.
