I found a connection in Danny which I’ve never found before.
I read this book as an assignment for my young adult literature class though I wasn’t expecting to relate so much to this. As a Mexican American girl, ironically enough also named Dani rather than Danny, I found such a deep connection and understanding with Danny that I’ve never had with a character in a book
before. It was as if I was reading a book written about myself with only a few details swapped. I empathized with Danny’s inability to speak Spanish, with the feeling of being an outsider in his own family, and even the silent heartbreak which led him to self harm. I don’t think I have ever read a book that so fully encompassed my childhood as this one has.
