This book is a sore sight for eyes. Leaving the Sea takes readers through the valley of the shadow of emotional death into the bleak tundra of emotional perjury. Several of Marcus' works attempt to inspire in the reader a sense of alienation, but this work is by far his most unrelenting. The story from which the book takes its title, "Leaving the Sea", recapitulates the form of this collection of stories as a whole - a series of powerful, sharp blows. Despair seems an end unto itself here; yet somehow, despite the cleanse of the humanistic colon, hope remains - perhaps only by dint of its antithesis. An excellent read.
About the author
Ben Marcus is the author of three books of fiction: The Age of Wire and String, Notable American Women, and The Flame Alphabet, and he is the editor of The Anchor Book of New American Short Stories. His stories have appeared in Harper’s, The New Yorker, Granta, Electric Literature, The Paris Review, McSweeney’s, Tin House, and Conjunctions. He has received the Berlin Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Whiting Writers’ Award, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in fiction, three Pushcart Prizes, and the Morton Dauwen Zabel Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He lives in New York with his wife and children.
