Colorless is an interesting read, with plenty of moments that gave me pause and made me think, but it underscores a trend in modern Murakami towards stylistic laziness. Metaphors occasionally get out of hand or peter off too soon, there are a few mistranslations, and the ending just feels half-baked. Not quite as well planned as 1Q84 or Wind-Up Bird, not quite as well-written as Norwegian Wood, not quite as thought-provoking as Hardboiled Wonderland; Colorless lacks anything to make it stand out.

This book in fashion, is very similar to Norwegian Wood without it's open interpretation ending. I do love the twist the book had offer but I couldn't help but think that this book is a "Tamer Norwegian Wood".

Fans of Murakami won't be disappointed by this introspective story told in his typically languid prose. Beautifully written, although in ways as detached from the reader as his protagonist is from others, its a satisfying journey that inspires one to meditate on the questions rather than dwell on the need for definitive answers.
