Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Anyone who wants to know the Catholic Church's position on just about any topic can easily find it by consulting the church's new catechism, a superbly organized and accessible compendium first published in 1992. For those intimidated by the catechism's language or overwhelmed by its sheer size, several guides have been produced, the latest of which is this easy-to-use companion volume, written by the bishop of Pittsburgh and chairman of the U.S. Bishops' Committee on Education. Although not intended as a substitute for the catechism itself, Wuerl's book provides a fitting introduction to the more detailed summary of Catholic thought, which was produced by a commission of church cardinals and bishops. Wuerl is an excellent teacher who has expanded on portions of the catechism's teachings in 83 chapters, each of them brief and followed by questions for discussion or reflection. He deals with the catechism itself, the place of Scripture, the sacraments, the commandments, moral conscience, natural moral law and prayer. Non-Catholics may be especially interested in his explanations of the church teachings that still separate Catholics and Protestants (namely Mary, the pope and the saints). Progressive Catholics will be happy to see that chapters on social justice issues and racism in America have been included, and traditionalists will be pleased that Wuerl chose to deal with such current concerns as the Catholic belief in the "real presence" and the teaching authority of the pope and bishops.

This book is a great point-by-point Catechism for those just beginning to learn about Christianity and Catholicism. While it starts a little simplistically for someone already familiar with the Church's teachings, it does give excellent explanations for those new to the faith. This would be a great gift for a child preparing for their first communion; along with the Catechism of the Catholic Church (which this book is an explanation of) it might even serve well for teenagers in preparation for confirmation, especially if they are poorly catechized. This book is also a great start for introducing friends to the Church who are curious but unaware of what the Church believes.

Bishop Wuerl, (now Cardinal Donald Wuerl) does an excellent summarization of the Catholic faith. This was a gift for our son who is now married and has moved to another state. He appreciated it as I did because it teaches the faith and is in conformity with the "Catechism of the Catholic Church". At the end of each chapter, there are questions to reflect on which makes it more personable for the reader. It is a book that I recommend for every Catholic, for anyone contemplating becoming a Catholic, or for anyone interested in understanding the Catholic way. Holly

As an inquisitive individual with a fairly secular upbringing, I felt that learning more about faith and living by the structure of a faith was a beneficial investment of my time. While this book does not answer every niggling question in my mind, it's an excellent starting place for non-Catholics and a book of interest to Catholics wanting to become more aware of how living the faith works.

I love The Catholic Way - It is helping me take the time and learn my religion in a more adult capacity instead of just what I learned as a child.

Easy to read. Helps me to understand so much as I go through my RCIA. I can take it in "small bites" and not become overwhelmed.

This is a great book for new Catholics as well as cradle Catholics or anyone who wants to learn more about Catholicism.
