About this ebook

During one of the most important times in the civil rights movement, one unforgettable family goes on a road trip in this Newbery and Coretta Scott King Honoree, from author Christopher Paul Curtis, recipient of the Coretta Scott King–Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement.

When the Watson family—ten-year-old Kenny, Momma, Dad, little sister Joetta, and brother Byron—sets out on a trip south to visit Grandma in Birmingham, Alabama, they don’t realize that they’re heading toward one of the darkest moments in America’s history. The Watsons’ journey reminds us that even in the hardest times, laughter and family can help us get through anything.

The Watsons Go To Birmingham - 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis, is one of my favorite books all-time. It shares a story of typical mid-1900s American family. The only difference is they are African American during a very segrated and tough racial time in American History. This book is told through the eyes of 10 year old Kenny Watson. There are some really hilarious times in this book, there are so "I can't put this book down" times and times that are extremely sad. When Daddy Watson decides it's time to go see Grandma in Birmingham, Alabama, something happens that makes you shocked and sad. Read The Watsons Go To Birmingham - 1963 to read this amazing book by Christopher Paul Curtis. -BT

Curtis' Coretta Scott King Award winning novel tells the story of the Watsons, a Michigan family who choose to move to Birmingham, Alabama to remove their oldest son Byron from hanging with the "wrong crowd". The move works for the family until the day of the burning of the Sixteenth Avenue Baptist Church when the family must face the possibility that Joetta is trapped inside. This book is a wonderful exploration of racism and racial violence.
