The Recruit: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 395 ratings

An idyllic California town. A deadly secret. A race against killers hidden in plain sight. . . .

“Extraordinary! I can think of no other thriller that portrays its vital themes—all relevant to our times—in such a riveting and up close and personal way.”—Jeffery Deaver, author of
The Bone Collector

Rancho Santa Elena in 1987 seems like the ideal Southern California paradise—that is, until a series of strange crimes threatens to unravel the town’s social fabric: workers attacked with mysterious weapons; a wealthy real estate developer found dead in the pool of his beach house. The only clues are poison and red threads found at both crime scenes. As Detective Benjamin Wade and forensic expert Natasha Betencourt struggle to connect the incidents, they begin to wonder: Why Santa Elena? And why now?

Soon Ben zeroes in on a vicious gang of youths involved in the town’s burgeoning white power movement. As he and Natasha uncover the truth about Santa Elena’s unsavory underbelly, Ben discovers that the group is linked to a much wider terror network, one that’s using a new technology called the internet to spread its ideology, plan attacks, and lure young men into doing its bidding. Ben closes in on identifying the gang’s latest target, hoping that the young recruit will lead him to the mastermind of the growing network. But as he digs deeper in an ever-widening investigation, Ben is forced to confront uncomfortable truths about himself and his beloved community, where corruption is ignored and prejudice is wielded against fellow citizens without fear of reprisal.

Chilling and timely,
The Recruit follows one man’s descent into the darkness lurking just beneath the respectable veneer of modern life.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Drew highlights what it’s like to be a lost teenager looking for community in the worst possible places….That’s just one of the many ways in which The Recruit, set in 1987, feels almost contemporary.”New York Times Book Review

“Extraordinary!
The Recruit is as smart and stylish as it is compelling. The plot speeds like a race car on a breathtaking course filled with twists and turns, and the novel brims with rich psychological insights into the many fully drawn characters. I can think of no other thriller that portrays its vital themes—all relevant to our times—in such a riveting and up close and personal way. Bravo!”—Jeffery Deaver, author of The Bone Collector

The Recruit is thoughtful, relevant, and brainy. Alan Drew paints such a vivid portrait of a seedy world, you’re convinced you’d never want to visit it. Yet as the story tightens its grip, you soon realize you can’t bear to leave.”—Graham Moore, author of The Holdout

“This socially complex police procedural, with its issues that remain all too relevant today, deserves a wide audience.”
Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“A terrific crime novel with an explosive climax, the book dares to find a level of empathy with its young perpetrators, connecting the dots between being frightened and ‘walking around in the dark’ and turning to hate. A moving, grippingly relevant mystery.”
Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

The Recruit by Alan Drew is a fantastic crime story featuring well-developed characters and multiple crimes weaved together in a shocking, but not the far-fetched way. Based in a Southern California town in the 80s, the book addresses themes that exist today. The story of outsiders coming into a new community and the insiders threatened by their differences and the change is one familiar to all. Drew brings you into the minds of all the characters telling the story from the perspectives of the medical examiner, the detective and police looking into unsolved cases, the Vietnamese immigrants new to America, and the young boys being led into white supremacy groups as he unvails and weaves together a wave of crime that unfortunately is too real.

A superb story filled with nuances of racism and love. The author is a budding talent perhaps given to employing too much descriptive language reflecting perhaps his academic immersion. For example, it was not necessary to relate that a TV was bolted to the wall in a cafe; just that it was playing. There are many such descriptive non-necessities. The tale is the power.

While this book is set in the 1980’s, it is all too relevant to the current political vibe. A real thriller and I should send Alan Drew the bill for my manicure. After this book, all I have left are nubs. A suspenseful, thoughtful, troubling, yet entertaining read. So glad I downloaded this novel.

The Recruit is a timely book about today's problems but set in California almost 40 years ago. The plot of this book is a good one and the characters are interesting and somewhat realistic of those one would find in a cult that feeds on prejudice and racial superiority. It is also the story of those men and women who fight to contain those types of evil from spreading. It is hard to read. The book is long and it flips back and forth between scenarios without warning. Ben and Natasha are the main characters and the ones that ultimately solve the crimes committed but at a personal and professional price. We are introduced to many other characters that are important and that are interesting but none of them are delved into with a depth that the reader needs to understand the motivation of some of the good guys. I enjoyed the book and think it is one worth reading but it seemed drawn out in places and superficial in others.

I wish to thank NetGalley and Random House for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this book. I have voluntarily read and reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is a story that grabs you from the very beginning and holds your interest to the very end. It is not a “read-in-one-sitting” type of book but is masterfully written. It is a mystery and thriller that you will enjoy.

The setting is mostly in a small California town in 1987. It could have been in today’s society. A group of violent young men recruit teenage gang members and train them to murder non whites with special emphasis on the Vietnam community. Detective Ben Wade and Medical Examiner Natasha Betencourt are on the case which begins with brutal slaughter of a dog and then a murder of a young girl. His case is full of twists and turns and the author involves the reader in all of them. The reader gets total background on all of the different characters explaining why they do what they do. I found this a refreshing way to tell the story. Since today’s news is so full of violence this is a story that continues through the years into our world. The story involves PTSD after the war in Vietnam, it’s aftermath within a family unit, unhealthy family dynamics and nonwhite people trying to survive in a small town filled with hatred and corruption

I recommend this book and look forward to his future books.

Once you've read the first three chapters the disparate characters start intersecting and you are completely drawn into the story. Well-written and compelling, this novel is part thriller, part detective story, filled with 'ripped from today's headlines' honesty, all brought together by a well drawn cast of characters. You won't be disappointed!

Straight off current news headlines, this mystery crime novel dives headfirst into figuring out how so many people get radicalized into white supremacy and violence. From cult-like leaders building secret armies to violence-prone mentally unstable teens swept into the movement, the intensity of hate escalates into destructive racist actions.

Set in a small Southern California town in 1987, when the internet was just emergent, hate groups turn to private online bulletin boards to evade the federal government. There’s Jacob, a bomb-building young teen, swept by his older 20-something neighbor Ian into a gang of skinheads. There’s Bao, a Vietnamese grocery store owner, being terrorized by Ian, who’s older brother got killed in Vietnam. Jacob’s Dad, a PTSD suffering Vietnam War vet who abuses Jacob in his worst post-traumatic moments, turns out to be having an affair with Bao’s daughter. Jacob discovers this, propelling him in rage to join the neo-Nazi gang, and commit hate crimes against both the Vietnamese and Mexicans.

Ben Wade, an LAPD detective who’s moved to the small town, embarks on investigating the hate crimes and uncovering a widespread White supremacy movement.

Stand by for an explosive ending!

A great read from the start. The tension building as the plot progressed, as a young boy’s anger, at an impressionable age, gets the better of him.
The descriptive writing at the scene of the bombing had me in tears. Probably the best piece of writing I have come across in many a year, and I promise you I have read some major books by major authors.
I will definitely be reading more by Alan Drew.
