About the author
Laura Childs is the New York Times bestselling author of the Tea Shop Mysteries, Scrapbook Mysteries, and Cackleberry Club Mysteries. In her previous life she was CEO/Creative Director of her own marketing firm and authored several screenplays. She is married to a professor of Chinese art history, loves to travel, rides horses, enjoys fund raising for various non-profits, and has two Chinese Shar-Pei dogs.
Laura specializes in cozy mysteries that have the pace of a thriller (a thrillzy!) Her three series are:
The Tea Shop Mysteries - set in the historic district of Charleston and featuring Theodosia Browning, owner of the Indigo Tea Shop. Theodosia is a savvy entrepreneur, and pet mom to service dog Earl Grey. She’s also an intelligent, focused amateur sleuth who doesn’t rely on coincidences or inept police work to solve crimes. This charming series is highly atmospheric and rife with the history and mystery that is Charleston.
The Scrapbooking Mysteries – a slightly edgier series that take place in New Orleans. The main character, Carmela, owns Memory Mine scrapbooking shop in the French Quarter and is forever getting into trouble with her friend, Ava, who owns the Juju Voodoo shop. New Orleans’ spooky above-ground cemeteries, jazz clubs, bayous, and Mardi Gras madness make their presence known here!
The Cackleberry Club Mysteries - set in Kindred, a fictional town in the Midwest. In a rehabbed Spur station, Suzanne, Toni, and Petra, three semi-desperate, forty-plus women have launched the Cackleberry Club. Eggs are the morning specialty here and this cozy cafe even offers a book nook and yarn shop. Business is good but murder could lead to the cafe’s undoing! This series offers recipes, knitting, cake decorating, and a dash of spirituality.

Truly I missed Charleston, SC one of my favorite cities of all time and I missed Theodosia, Drayton and Haley the aspiring a delightful baker at Indigo Tea and the adventures or misadventures they find themselves in. Somehow where the Three Amigos are 'trouble' follows and envelopes this trio in a variety of whodunits as well as learning so much about tea blends, etc. Then of course there is the constant conflicted curmudgeon of a Detective, Burt Tidwell, and Director/Benfactor of the Heritage Society Timothy Neville a dear friend of Drayton, the Master Tea Blender.
Who murdered famous director Jordan Cole? What direction is Theodosia's love life taking? Does Timothy's granddaughter who worked with Cole have anything to do with his untimely demise? All of these questions continue to be woven together until one knot at a time, they are unraveled, at potentially great risk to Theodosia until the answers reveal themselves in due course. So if you are looking for a real comforting treat, sit back with a nice cuppa tea, a scone and enjoy the journey.
This is a great edition to a wonderful mystery series. I love the plot. It is filled with twists and red herrings that keep you off the track of the real culprit. Then, I was surprised by the revelation at the end. I love how the author used her settings as characters themselves. You get a complete picture of Charleston without leaving the comfort of your home.
Much to Theo's surprise both Jory and Detective Tidwell ask Theo to investigate. Of course investigating gets Theo into trouble and nearly killed but her resourcefulness and some dumb luck help her out. Parker her present boyfriend gets his nose out of joint at one point but proves that he is the better man by at least giving lip service to the fact that Theo is her own woman.
I enjoy these books for their sense of place and their characters. That being said I felt that this book was a little character light. I think that it is great that there are recipes included in each book and suggestions for tea parties and resources for more tea related info. This book included a little info about the Gullah culture. I would not mind hearing more about the Gullah in future books.
