Sixteen-year-old Jem struggles to maintain the status quo at home in Trenton, New Jersey, when the family men join the war for independence.

There are signs of rebellion in the Emerson household several years before the actual American Revolution hits in 1776! Brought up in a relatively liberal household, Jemima Emerson is quite a challenge for her tutor, John Reid, who is known as a Tory with strong ties to England. How could Jem's parents be friends with a man who opposes American freedom? Jem longs for freedom on every level, in the home and her homeland--and John represents the forces that restrict her.

Jem and her family soon find themselves fighting for freedom in whatever ways they can in the Revolutionary War. Before long, Jem discovers that there is much more to Mr. Reid than she ever imagined. Her feelings about him change when Jem realizes that John shares her love of freedom--and will risk his life to defend it.

I read this book for the first time in 9th grade. I loved it then, and couldn't put it down. I read if for school and read it over the weekend, finishing it way before I had to. I recently re-read it at age 20, and wow. I still love this book and it has a special place in my heart. It makes history interesting and makes you want to know more. I wish there was a sequel, because I love these characters and want to know how their life was after the war. I think it is a perfect book for those who want a story that stays with you. It is heartwarming and sad at times. It isn't all smiles and fluff, it deals with real things people deal with. You can relate to it, even if it took place in 1776. I could have used some more romantic moments, but it works. I loved this book and Ann Rinaldi made me a fan with this one.

I think Ann Rinaldi is one of the best YA authors for historical fiction. Rinaldi always adds some romance and wonderful moments into her books. This book is about a girl named Jem, the setting is during the American Revolution. She can't stand her tutor, John Reid who seems to always to be on her case...later on that changes. Jem also doesn't like John because he's a Tory. She ends up finding things about him that surpraises the heck out of her. Her family ends up joining ther revolution. This is also a story about a girl's coming-of-age...Jem ends up maturing and taking respondsibility. She keeps the family together :O)

I'm not sure when this book became available on Kindle, but I know that when I first looked for it, it was only available in paperback. I'm so happy that they made it an e-book!

I love that Jemima is a strong-willed female character from a time period where such stubbornness and spirit was looked down upon in a young woman. Jem knows what is expected of her, but she struggles to be her own person despite the rules. Naturally, the one person she fights again most is her tutor, John Reid.

Reid is an interesting character because he's fighting against himself the whole time he's teaching Jem--he cares about her, yet he tries desperately to keep his interactions professional. He tries to act aloof, yet it is noticeable that Jem's barbs reach their mark every time. I think that duality in his character makes the revelation about him believable.

I first read this book many, many years ago. Now that it's on Kindle, I'll revisit it often.

Love this book! Early on, I made it a habit to read every book which interested my daughter. Not only did this book hold my interest, but I actually consider it one of my favorites. It is a favorite of my daughter's, as well. It is now a "must buy" for all of the Tweens and Teens in our family!

This book was fantastic, I could hardly put it down. The book had me hooked from the very beginning. I felt like I learned a lot about that time in history and fell in love with all of the characters in the process.

It was okay. I felt that the interactions, especially male to female ones were accurate of the time. That did not stop me from finding them grating. I found the angle of a twenty four year old being in love with a sixteen year old creepy. But it was a different time.

Time Enough for Drums is narrated by fifteen year old Jemima, whose family are patriots in Trenton NJ. As the War progresses, Jem grows from an impatient, saucy young girl into a woman who has e experienced love, heartbreak, a and deprivation. Rich with historical detail.
