As it has in the past, the first snow of the year signifies to Joel Gustafson his very own New Year's Eve. So when the snow begins to fall on a cold November day, Joel gets busy making resolutions--three to be exact. Resolution #1: Live to be at least a hundred. He realizes that this will require toughening himself up by testing his physical limits. Resolution #2: Set his eyes on the sea for the first time. To do this, Joel knows he needs to help sort out his father Samuel's problems and get him back to the life he left behind--being a sailor at sea. Resolution #3: See a naked lady. At almost fourteen, Joel feels he needs to see the world--including females--in an entirely different light.

As the winter days pass, life becomes ever more complicated, but Joel is determined to keep his resolutions--for his father, for himself, and for their future.

When the Snow Fell follows Joel's journey as he realizes along the way that it will require determination, strength, and valor in order to truly become a young man.

Joel Gustafsson, the protagonist of Mr. Mankell's books for young people, is now about to be fourteen, still lives with his father Samuel in cold Sweden, but strange things are happening to his body, although not always fast enough. He is embarrassed about his voice, for instance, which is prone to be shrill. Joel longs to live to be one hundred, see the sea and most importantly-- at least it is what he obsesses most about because of his raging hormones-- see a naked woman. He still wishes his father were a glamorous sailor, as he once was, rather than a lackluster lumberjack, but he misses his run-away mom less and less.

In addition to all the problems that come with being thirteen and in school, Joel also does the grocery shopping, sometimes does the cooking for him and his dad, functioning as his own mom. All too often, however, he serves as the parent to his father, having to go searching for him when he finds him missing from home, knowing that he will find Samuel with drinking companions and will have to bring him home, inebriated, and put him to bed.

Joel in both his awkwardness and sexual awakening becomes every teenager. He is shy and awkward in the presence of the opposite sex, is convinced his father and other adults do not understand him, is afraid of what his life will be like as an adult, does not understand the mystery of death, and cannot wait to fly from the parental nest.

Although it has been many a moon since I was Joel's age, he is totally believable and so very likeable. I cannot conceive that teenagers around the world would not identify with him.

I do like very much the stories that Mankell tell us, and I read this one of Joel Gustafson stories. But I prefer all the time the Inspector
Wallander's stories and I read all of them. I would like ask to Mankell that writes more stories with him, but I know that this author
make Walllander died.
Thanks, and forgive me if there are some mistakes in the writings.

THE HENNING MANKELL NOVELS ARE THE BEST-WRITTEN OF ALL THE MANY SWEDISH MYSTERIES. IN MY PREVIOUS REVIEW, I REFERRED TO HIS NOVELS BY THE NAME "SUPERINTENDENT KURT." THEY ARE SUBTLY NON- SEXIST,WHICH IS A GREAT LITTLE PLEASURE AMD RELIEF TO THIS MALE READER. KURT IS THE CLASSIC NON- CONFORMIST COP, AND VERY SUCCESSFUL, USUALLY. BATTLING IDIOT BUREAUCRATS. WOMEN OFFICERS ARE ALLOWED TO MAKE BRILLIANT DEDUCTIONS AND DISCOVERIES. KURT'S SUPERIOR OFFICER IS A WOMAN, AND A GOOD ONE, TOO. THERE IS NEVER ANY PREACHING ABOUT THIS. KURT IS NOT PERFECT AT ALL. HIS WIFE HAS MOVED ON. HE HAS A VERY INTERESTING 20-SOMETHING DAUGHTER, AND A NUTTY PAINTER FATHER. ALL THIS MAKES MANKELL ESPECIALLY READABLE, ALONG WITH HIS EXCELLENT WRITING/INVENTING STORY-TELLING SKILLS.

having read all of Mankell`s Wallender books I was surprised to read about a boy coming of age in a small hamlet in Sweden. It is a book that I would say is slanted towards the younger reader ,possibly even a female reader. It did entertain an that is as it should be.

This is written by my favorite police procedural author. I was surprised to find these stories translated and decided to try them. I like them a lot.

This was a sensitive story of a young boy who has heavy responsibility as the only support and companion of an alcoholic father. It tells of life in a small Swedish town where no one's life is easy. Joel looks after the house and takes care of his father when the latter can't stay away from the local pubs. He prepares food and cleans up. At the same time Joel is growing up, becoming interested in girls, and thinking about his future. The story is certainly a departure from the other Mankell books I've read. It is a very sensitive story about a boy growing up and I would recommend it to anyone.

Being a Henning Mankell fan there is nothing but high praise for the way his books grab your interest on the first page and
then pull you through until the last. His characters and plots are so different than the American mystery types that I am very
pleased that I took a chance on a new- to- me author. His own character Kurt Wallender is such a fallible human being that
you want to help him when the chips are down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting reading from an adult prospective

Nice children's book about a boy reaching early adolescence and the changes this is making to his life. His father's problems with alcohol help in his maturing as does the death of an elderly man that he saved from the snow.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really good read

I don't care if they are aimed at 'young' readers, they are engaging stories, well written and evocative of the era. The series of four are all highly recommended, my favourite being the fourth one.
