About this ebook

A revised and updated edition (with more than 70% new material) of the evergreen classic about the innate differences between boys and girls and how best to parent and teach girls and boys successfully, with completely new chapters on sexual orientation and on transgender and intersex kids.

Eleven years ago, Why Gender Matters broke ground in illuminating the differences between boys and girls--how they perceive the world differently, how they learn differently, how they process emotions and take risks differently. Dr. Sax argued that in failing to recognize these hardwired differences between boys and girls, we ended up reinforcing damaging stereotypes, medicalizing normal behavior (see: the rising rates of ADHD diagnosis), and failing to support kids to reach their full potential. In the intervening decade, the world has changed drastically, with an avalanche of new research which supports, deepens, and expands Dr. Sax's work. This revised and updated edition includes new findings about how boys and girls interact differently with social media and video games; a completely new discussion of research on gender non-conforming, LGB, and transgender kids, new findings about how girls and boys see differently, hear differently, and even smell differently; and new material about the medicalization of bad behavior.

I just finished reading the 2nd edition of Why Gender Matters so apologies in advance it I sound a little fired up. I remember the first time I read this book (it was the 1st edition) and being angry at myself that it took me so long to read it. Now I'm ready to be frustrated (not angry) with anyone else who doesn't read it. I quote what I said after reading the 1st edition. "Every literate person on Earth needs to read this book. And the illiterate need to learn to read just so they can read this book." It has answered so many questions that I never knew to ask, and suggested logical, evidence based solutions to problems I never knew existed. I don't want to be an alarmist, but it's hard not to sound like one once you've seen the picture Dr. Sax paints here. Over the course of this book Dr. Sax brings you to the conclusion that American and American-like society is collapsing because of the mainstream societies determination to destroy anything even slightly masculine or feminine (and I do mean destroy) while simultaneously deciding for every person alive that any interest in anything even slightly resembling something of their traditional gender's opposite means they are of that opposite. I'll admit that in high emotion I probably overstated and exaggerated, but that's only more reason to read this book! So you can understand where I'm coming from! Do anything legal you have to to get a copy of this book long enough to read it! Anything. Legal. In closing I can not recommend this book enough and WHY HASN'T EVERYONE READ IT ALREADY!
