The best sci-fi has a sense of awe about both far-flung possibility and the way things actually work. Ted Chiang’s short stories imagine a mathematician driven to despair by his work; the lives of stoneworkers constructing the Tower of Babel; and a future where humans are obsolete yet safe from extinction. “Story of Your Life” (the basis of the movie Arrival) introduces a linguist whose communication with aliens upends her conception of free will. Chiang’s crisp and sometimes sly writing is concerned not just with the fate of humankind but with how we treat each other while we’re here.

Good stuff
Lots of great stories in here. It's a whole new type of science fiction. I'm not even sure if I would label it as science fiction to be honest. Some stories are slow some are fast, but most have solid characters you can relate to. If you can't get into one of the stories go to the next one although I recommend finishing them. The endings are great. The story of "Your life and others" is truly breathtaking. It's no wonder they've made it into a film.
