Cassie is now age 18 in this book from the Logan Family Saga series. It explores experiences of Cassie and her older brother in Jackson, MS in December 1941. The story examines how they risked their own lives by helping a friend reach Memphis on his way north to escape lynching. It explains the effect of black-owned newspapers and businesses on the community as well as civil rights progress. The book is recommended reading for all teens and adults interested in expanding their own knowledge with the struggle to achieve basic rights and opportunity in Mississippi. Of all of Taylor's books in this series, The Road to Memphis is my favorite.

I truly loved this book. It was very emotional and so relatable. It reminded me of some of the stories m family told me as a child. My heart feels so heavy as I look at today and see reflections of days gone by.

Read a couple of these in my 6th grade English class! Wanted to buy the whole set so I can go back and refresh my memory and see what has happened since.

I read this book for the first time when I was eleven or twelve years old and fell in love with it. I had read the first two books and others in the series so I knew I'd like this one. It turned out to be my favorite book of the series. This would go on my all time favorite. I would recommend that all children read it to learn about their history in a fun way.

Although The Road to Memphis is the last chapter, chronologically speaking, of the Logans family saga that comprises three other novels and several short stories, you don't have to read other books in the series to 'get' it, as it's pretty self-contained. The novel is set in 1941 (i.e. during the WWII and well before the civil rights era) and depicts the life of a black family in the American South.

I've seen The Road to Memphis advertised as adventure book for children ("age 10 and up"), but I'm not sure it can be classified as such. I mean, the earlier novels pulled no punches in describing racism, unfairness and inequality perpetuated by Jim Crow laws (as well as bravery and ingenuity with which black folks combat them), but this one is even darker. At 17, Cassie, the main protagonist and narrator of the novel, is not a teenage girl anymore but a young woman, and the themes discussed here touch on wide range on 'adult' themes: from teenage pregnancy to the possibility of sexual violence at the hands of white people. The trip to Memphis that Cassie and her brothers undertake to save their friend from imprisonment is probably the most gripping, adrenaline-filled sequence written by Taylor, but it also showcases some of the worst traits of segregation era. The scene at the truck stop is horrific and heartbreaking at the same time (you'll see). Don't get me wrong, this stuff should probably be the required reading at school, but do we really want to label it 'adventure'?

The book is not all dread and despair, though. I've really enjoyed watching Cassie becoming an independently-thinking young woman, being involved in a romantic relationship and learning firsthand that the world outside her home state can be pretty different and maybe, just maybe, more tolerant of black folks. As usual, the ending is bittersweet – with the firm emphasis on bitter – but somehow conveying optimism and hope for better days. Definitely recommended.

It was great to see the characters grow into young adults, still trying to navigate their way through a still very racist Mississippi.
