About the Author

A writer of graphic novels and lover of 90s soundtracks, Nathan Page lives in Toronto, where the streets are never finished and the raccoons are definitely not messing around. His works include The Montague Twins: The Witch’s Hand, The Montague Twins: The Devil’s Music, and Who Was the First Man on the Moon?: Neil Armstrong.
Drew Shannon is a Toronto-based illustrator born in London, Ontario, who moved after graduating from Sheridan's illustration program in 2011. Some of his clients include the Globe and Mail, the Washington Post, Reader's Digest, NPR, UNICEF, and more. His first children's book, Extreme Battlefields, with author Tanya Lloyd Kyi, was published in 2016 by Annick Press. See more of his work at drewshannon.ca.

When lightning strikes a nearby lighthouse, the teen sleuths discover an altar and see someone practicing witchcraft—who then chases them. Al and Pete realize they've uncovered a mystery that threatens to uncover some of Port Howl's darkest secrets. Along with their stepsister Charlie, their professor father David, and David's assistant Rowan, the boys try to crack this spooky case. Reminiscent of the illustrations in the "Lumberjanes" series, the art is charming with sketchy lines and bold watercolors. Despite minimalist designs, characters are expressive. The sequences featuring witches are especially striking, with dramatic angles, varying panel sizes, and some hauntingly pale colors. Though the art might suggest a middle grade audience, scenes of teens drinking and smoking, along with the occasional swear word, make this book more appropriate for a YA audience. Set against the backdrop of the late 1960s burgeoning gay rights movement, the tale also explores the complications of grappling with an LGBTQ+ identity in more close-minded times. Twin brothers Alastair and Peter Montague are surprised when their summer activities move from rescuing the dog of Roger Bradford—business mogul and descendant of Port Howl’s colonial founders—to becoming embroiled in a mystery packed with action, suspense, and magic. The boys live with David, a professor; his truck-driver wife, Shelly; and the couple’s daughter, Charlie. After harrowing experiences involving a decrepit lighthouse and a robed, hooded figure with a clawlike hand, the three teenagers are determined to figure out what evil is lurking below the surface of Port Howl. When David learns what they are up to, he enlists his protégé, Rowan, to help him reveal to the twins their unusual history—and to teach them and Charlie how to use magic responsibly. Meanwhile, Bradford’s daughter, Rachel, engages two friends in scrying—with scary results. The full-color illustrations in nostalgic tones evoke classic comic book art. The artwork is emotionally expressive, enhancing the characterization. Humor and character development abound along with thoughtful musings as the novel skillfully entwines its subplots into a tale that ties up every loose end by the time the United States has had its first successful moon landing. One character’s coming out is handled sensitively. Main characters are white; Rowan and a secondary character present as people of color.
