Publisher Description

Bestselling author and radio host Michael Medved recounts some of the most significant events in America’s rise to prosperity and power, from the writing of the Constitution to the Civil War. He reveals a record of improbabilities and amazements that demonstrate what the Founders always believed: that events unfolded according to a master plan, with destiny playing an unmistakable role in lifting the nation to greatness.

Among the stirring, illogical episodes described here:

• A band of desperate religious refugees find themselves blown hopelessly off course, only to be deposited at the one spot on a wild continent best suited for their survival

• George Washington’s beaten army, surrounded by a ruthless foe and on the verge of annihilation, manages an impossible escape due to a freakish change in the weather

• A famous conqueror known for seizing territory, frustrated by a slave rebellion and a frozen harbor, impulsively hands Thomas Jefferson a tract of land that doubles the size of the United States

• A weary soldier picks up three cigars left behind in an open field and notices the stogies have been wrapped in a handwritten description of the enemy’s secret battle plans—a revelation that gives Lincoln the supernatural sign he’s awaited in order to free the slaves

When millions worry over the nation losing its way, Medved’s sweeping narrative, bursting with dramatic events and lively portraits of unforgettable, occasionally little-known characters, affirms America as “fortune’s favorite,” shaped by a distinctive destiny from our beginnings to the present day.

Great Read

I truly respect Michael Medved as a conservative broadcaster who is respectful of those who differ in their opinions.

In my own experience from living overseas for two years as a Mormon missionary in Portugal, I never eased to be amazed by the love for America that most of the Portuguese had.

In the years since I have come to realize that people from every corner of the Earth have journeyed to this land and have to some degree attained the American Dream and their friends and families from their native homelands have witnessed the achievement of their wildest dreams over here.

Almost every Portuguese person I met had an aunt or uncle, a cousin, or a sibling who had come over here and conveyed the success of their journey over here. And thus the most ardent believers of American Exceptionalism I have ever met were not from here, but over there in Portugal.

Many would muse,"If only we could be more like America!"

I truly enjoyed reading this book. I am glad to be reminded of the special place in history that our nation has been placed in. And the most ardent believers in this idea have been people I have met from other lands.

Medved's at his best

I caught a segment on Michael Medved's radio program of him reading a portion of this book. While I am not always a listener of his show, my favorite times to tune in are when he is teaching something -- whether historical or current events. I was spellbound by the excerpt he read and SO excited when he went to a break and announced that this was part of this, new book. This book will not disappoint and whether you are interested in the founding of America more for the historical connections or whether the spiritual foundation of our country is more of interest, this book will not disappoint. I was so pleased to be able to order this in hardback for my husband as a Christmas present, but my digital copy is just for me to read, enjoy, highlight, and re-read. Thank you, Michael Medved for writing this book!
