Star Wars: The X-Wing Series, Volume 9: Starfighters of Adumar Audible Audiobook – Abridged

The X-wing fighter pilots have earned their reputation as the Rebel Alliance's ultimate strike force by overwhelming enemies with their rapid-fire assaults. But now they are about to embark on a diplomatic mission that will prove to be even more hazardous than all-out combat.

The neutral world of Adumar has decided to pick a side in the war to control the galaxy. Delegates from both the New Republic and the Empire have been invited to Adumar, and each camp will be given a chance to plead its government's case. But there is one small catch: since the Adumari prize military skill above all else, they insist that both delegations be composed exclusively of fighter pilots.

For pilot Wedge Antilles and his company, it's an unfamiliar exercise in diplomacy and one that's filled with unexpected peril. For once they arrive, the X-wing pilots are challenged by Adumar's fierce warriors and attacked by Imperial assassins bent on eliminating all competition. But these challenges pale in comparison to the threat posed by a rogue Republic agent, one who is determined to win Adumar's allegiance once and for all - even if it costs the X-wing pilots their lives.

This book is an excellent edition to Star Wars. If you are a fan of the X-wing series, then this is a must read. Starfighters of Adumar (SoA) is pretty much a self contained story and is one of my favorite books. The story is fantastic, comedy is on point, and is just a great adventure overall. The story of SoA follows the adventures of Wedge Antilles and his main Rogues (Tycho, Wes, and Hobbie) after the events of Grand Admiral Thrawn and Daala in the Expanded Universe. I have read SoA at least 4 times and bought it as a Christmas gift for my brother-in-law.

This is one of my favorites. We've watched these main characters throughout the extended universe, but now we get to see things through their "glasses," so to speak. And besides the fascinating, colorful new world of Adumar, the author weaves some basic humanity into the story, things that catch my attention and get read over again.
Starfighters of Adumar is a masterpiece of microcosmic (Wedge) and macrocosmic (do the ends truly justify the means?) storytelling. A man is chosen to lead an unusual, diplomatic mission. In the course of that mission, he faces his own loneliness, takes a long step off a short personal cliff, and refuses to sink to the level of "whatever it takes."
Always wanted to ride along with an ace Rebel pilot? Ever wondered how to make a public speech? Need to brush up on your unorthodox military strategy? An avid Star Wars fan? Possessed of a dry sense of humor? You'll love this and other books of the X-Wing series.

Let the last of the X-Wing series go out with a bang! "Starfighters of Adumar" was truly an enjoyable read, the best of Aaron Allston's X-Wing books.

Wedge's love life becomes a bit of a soap opera -- with breakups, jealousy and emotional turmoil all the while mixed in with war and diplomacy. I was pleased to see Iella's return and the development of Wedge's relationship with her.

Wedge as a general and diplomat was believable. Allston did find a way to make that work. The turn of events on Adumar was paced very well, as I looked forward to every page. He and his foe face an ethical dilemma, forcing them to choose between orders and honor. It's interesting the path each chooses.

Battles were easy to visualize. That's really the most difficult part of reading Star Wars books for me. I sometimes find them hard to follow, but that was not the case here. The strategics were logical, the scenes were not painted with overwhelming detail. We see what Wedge sees, which is enough to keep me in the story.

Overall, it was a satisfying ending to the series. Allston did a wonderful job.

While the XWing books were never my favorites in the Star Wars series, I have to give credit to them where due. These books always had the best humor in them, from one liners to elaborate pranks the pilots play on one another.

A couple of things kind of leave me cold though. One is the level of detail the author goes into when describing aerial maneuvers - I just cannot keep track and them and basically just end up glossing over them instead of trying to visualize what is going on as described. The other thing is that Wedge Antilles, as written in these books, has the tendency to turn into something of a bully when something isnt going his way, shouting people down and threatening them in various ways, even when the target of his rant is not under his command.

Any fan of the expanded universe will tell you that the x-wing series are the cream of the crop. They have the greatest character development, the most action, the best writing, and the best humor of all the star wars books. This one does not disappoint and is on par with both the Rouge Squadron and Wraith Squadron X-wing series. I find myself caring WAY MORE about the characters developed in the x-wing books than in any of the other Star Wars novels. This one is great, but make sure you read the other X-wing books in order first.

Bought this as a present for a friend. Came in good condition and it's one of the best SW books ever written. RIP EU

Wedge continues to be a character worth exploring. His back as forth banter with his crew is entertaining from start to finish. Throughout the x-wing series I have enjoyed the humor and wit, but I believe this book took it to a new level. Allston dives into Wedge's thoughts and emotions as he is a man on the brink of breakdown. Sick of fighting and in need of a vacation he is tossed into yet another mission. I really enjoyed the depth of his character. His connection to hobbie, janson, and tycho make this novel a complete experience.

One of my favorite Star Wars books. proves that you dont need the big 4 or 6 (depending how you look at it) to make a great SW story. Gives me hope for spin off movies.
