A marvelous and well-crafted first effort. Certainly ranks with those by more seasoned hands. Felix Gilman manages his complex setting and delightful characters with a deftness and vision that allows this work to stand shoulder to shoulder with Williams's "Metropolitan", Mieville's Perdido Street novels, the works of Jack Vance and Gene Wolfe. I can't wait to read "Gears of the City!"
