An archery contest ensues, but the results of that contest are secondary to Tetsuya’s conversations with the boy, during which he shares affirming life wisdom through the lens of the patience and self-awareness required to hit a distant target. Prolific Brazilian author Paulo Coelho—who’s best known for his global bestseller The Alchemist—delivers his lessons in the form of a parable, gentle enough to soothe but powerful enough to persuade. In noisy and chaotic times, The Archer is a welcome celebration of quiet perseverance.

Coelho (The Alchemist) returns with the jaunty story of a master archer who dispenses philosophical advice. Using a fablelike framework, Coelho spools out short chapters that are interspersed with simple but evocative artwork. The story begins as a young boy leads a stranger to the local carpenter, Tetsuya, whom the stranger claims is a master archer in hiding. The stranger requests a competition to prove he is more skilled than Tetsuya, but when Tetsuya takes his turn, he aims for his target while balancing on a rickety bridge. Tetsuya's lesson is that the stranger can not compete, because though he performs well in ideal, controlled situations he cannot be a master until he can also perform well under difficult, trying situations. After the stranger leaves, Tetsuya and the boy return to the carpentry shop, and Tetsuya holds forth with meditative gems meant to teach the boy the skill of archery as he himself had been taught, such as "never hold back from firing the arrow if all that paralyzes you is fear of making a mistake," and "once the arrow has been shot, there is nothing more the archer can do, except follow its path to the target." The narrative is simple, and the act of holding a bow and shooting an arrow is a fairly obvious metaphor for doing one's best and striving for excellence. Despite this, fans of Coehlo's koanlike narratives will find much to ponder. (Nov.)

Paulo Coehlo does it again
Paulo Coehlo, in my opinion, is a master in conveying the need to achieve inner peace and enlightenment, as well as a connection with the world around you. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which only takes an hour or so to read. Take the time to reflect on each sentence. The book is arranged in a way that’s conducive to pausing and allowing the words to sink in. The illustrations are beautiful as well. Highly recommended for readers of all ages.
Giving Life Meaning
As an archer myself, was naturally drawn to this book. Coelho is one of my favorite authors of all time so very excited to see he also enjoyed this hobby. His ability to touch deeply the internal process of archery made me look at my own archery with fresh perspective. My goals are no longer on a score card, but rather in my heart. Instead of hoping for a center shot, I strive for a perfect release or artful form.
A great example of archery as an art form, philosophy and spiritual practice. Recommended for anyone looking to practice something with deep intention.
