Following on the heels of  Squish #1: Super Amoeba , Squish returns in Brave New Pond. This graphic novel features amoebas, rotifers, algae and other micro-organisms who live in a world that looks suspiciously like our own. The brother-sister team of Jennifer and Matt Holm use single-celled organisms as stand-ins for the situations that children find themselves in. So, rather than looking like a morality tale, we get an entertaining story for kids. This book describes the challenges of wanting to be popular and fit in, while still being true to one's friends. To help guide Squish, the Holms continue the comic book within a graphic novel featuring Squish's idol Super Amoeba (so far nameless). Also, they add, as before, a little science experiment at the end of the book. This time, how to make your own slime with simple household ingredients.

If your child is a Babymouse fan, it's time to meet Squish! Although my boys love Babymouse, too, Squish is a bit more boy oriented (the main character and his best friend are amoebaes). It's definitely NOT a science text, but it does introduce them to some quirky microorganisms. Nothing wrong with adding amoeba, paramecium, planaria, slime mold and a few other terms to their vocabulary while they're enjoying a good story! We've enjoyed all four books so far from this series.

Great book that results in my son reading more, I love. This book makes him laugh, keeps him engaged longer than I expected. I would have to say this is definitely a great series for kids! Funny, easy for him to read and use his imagination!

Fantastic book series for reluctant readers! My 9 year old loved the book because there were many amusing pictures and a quirky story line. If you have kids interested in Diary of a Wimpy Kid or Dragonbreath, this is a great choice. No fighting him to read!

My seven year-old son loves the Squish books--which is awesome for me, because I'm always worried that he isn't reading enough. I really think these books were actually what got him excited about reading in the first place.

My 11-year-old nephew LOVED these. Christmas got very quiet after he opened these - I think he had gone through the entire first volume before the end of the day.
