Gr 3–7—"The Last Kids on Earth" fans will be excited for this graphic novel spinoff. Jack, Quint, June, and Dirk are reading a volume of their favorite comic, all about Z-man saving Apocalyptia, when they realize that they have reached the end of what has been written. Not wanting to be left wondering what would happen next, the four friends decide to write their own comics and create their own superheroes. Even though each superhero wants to be the star, the four will have to find a way to work together to save Apocalyptia, which proves to be a challenge. This graphic novel has the same humor and action that the original story has, but, because much of the action occurs within the comic itself, it has new characters and is set in a different world. Pages in the world of the comic are full color while those depicting the four writers are monochromatic shades. The illustrations are fun and add to the story. The superheroes are well thought out, including their costumes and in-depth background stories. VERDICT Readers who have been long-time fans of "The Last Kids on Earth" will enjoy, but anyone could jump right into this story and be able to follow along.—Michelle Lettus

My 9-year-old son is a huge comic book/graphic novel fanatic. His favorite series is Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Prior to this book, he had seen the Last Kids on Earth series on Netflix but had not read any of the books. When I saw that this book in the series is written in a graphic novel format, I thought it was something he would love. I was right! He received this book for Christmas and read it twice within a week. Since then, he has read it several more times. He loves it! Reading this book has also made him even more interested in watching the Netflix series. Now that he is more connected to the story and characters, I am planning on giving him some of the Last Kids on Earth books for his upcoming birthday. I hope the series creates more of these graphic novel-type books!

Such a fun read! My 9 year old son took off with it as soon as it arrived, and he devoured it in one sitting. Now... for a kid with ADHD, that's saying something. I stole it back long enough to take a picture before he took it and read it several more times. I had to sneak in and read it while he was away at Grandma's. I can definitely see why he enjoys it! Full of bright, fun graphics and a storyline that keeps you engaged. I highly recommend this to any and everyone!
