"A dark, twisting coming-of-age sure to leave readers glancing over their shoulder for the Devil. Kao perfectly illustrates the struggles of choosing your own path through a lens of fire and knives, and you won't want to put it down." —Andrew Joseph White, New York Times bestselling author of Hell Followed With Us

A dark and sinister debut YA novel about a teen boy who must hunt down those marked by the devil - including the girl he has fallen for.

Perfect for fans of Neal Shusterman and Kendare Blake.

Rae Winter should be dead.

Some say that walking away from the car crash that killed her dad is a miracle, but seventeen-year-old Matthew Watts knows that the forces of Good aren’t the only ones at work. The devil, Lucifer himself, can mark a soul about to pass on, sending it back to the land of the living to carry out his evil will.

Matt has grown up skipping from town to town alongside his father hunting anyone who has this mark. They have one purpose:
Find these people, and exterminate them.

After helping his father for years, Matt takes on his own mission: Rae Winter, miracle survivor. But when Matt starts to fall for Rae, to make friends for the first time in his life, he’s not sure who or what to believe anymore. How can someone like Rae, someone who is thoughtful and smart and kind, be an agent of the devil? With the lines of reality and fantasy, myth and paranoia blurred, Matt confronts an awful truth....

What if the devil’s mark doesn’t exist?

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Kao deftly blends chilling, slow-burn psychological horror with supernatural elements and moving relationships in this intense debut." Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"This thoughtful debut offers both supernatural thrills and careful character development."
Kirkus Reviews

"Matt’s voice is raw and chaotic, revealing his self-doubt, frustration, wide-eyed innocence (he’s never been in school before much less had friends), and confusion with an authentic messiness."
—BCCB

"Thoughtfully drawn and interesting."

A miracle survivor or someone marked by Lucifer and brought back to this world to carry out his will? That is what Matt and his father must figure out. They hunt anyone who has been marked and eliminate them before they can do their evil. Matt, now seventeen, is on his first solo mission. He has to see if Rae Winters is marked or not. However, soon Matt starts struggling with his mission, what to believe, and to make matters worse he's falling for his project and making friends. Something he's never done. But the consequences of his actions will have lethal results. This book is called a "dark and twisted coming-of-age" and that is so accurate.Wow, did I freaking love this book. It was a non-stop thrill ride!!! This book was so fun to read. I couldn't t stop I read most of it in a day.I don't usually read books from a male pov, but I loved Matt! There were times I just wanted to reach into this book and pull him out and protect him!The cast of characters were all so lovable. This book pulled on my hearts strings! I was not prepared to have those emotions. This book reminded me of why I love YA. It was dark, fast paced, full of twists, and moments that make you tear up a little.I highly recommend this book! 5 stars!

You know those books from adolescence that you still remember as an adult? The characters drew me in and I was happy to escape into their lives any moment I had to find out what would unfold next for them. And if reading this book with a group, you could definitely peel back the deeper levels of meaning for thoughtful discussion and a fun book club event. I look forward to the sequel!

This book is certainly unlike any other YA book I’ve read. Well written, excellent pacing and concise.
Matthew is part of a very secret group of people who evaluate others for the Mark of Lucifer. Once they’ve gotten enough evidence, that person is eliminated in spectacular fashion.
Matthew has been helping his Dad in this, but as he grows older, hes given his first solo project. As he beings, doubts and confusion start, as a reader, I was very unsure of the outcome, or what was reality until the end of the book.
Overall, I fell in love with the town and the characters of the town. The tension was extreme for me and I found myself kind of worried for the characters who of course aren’t real!
Great very terrifying read with an unexpected ending.

I made it about halfway through before I decided not to finish this book. I found the protagonist to be wooden, and the other characters fell flat for me as well. At first, this flatness was what made me want to push on, as it stands in contrast to some of the overwrought emotion that can be typical in YA lit. But what I was hoping would be more stoic or minimalist didn't pan out as either.

I can't accept that a protagonist that has been raised the way Matthew has could be in any way emotionally healthy or normal. While he clearly feels some distress at the thought of killing people, it's a very shallow sort of dismay. I found it especially off-putting that the book seemed to be setting up some kind of romantic rivalry between potential killers. None of it made any sense to me emotionally, and I quit when I realized that the author just hadn't sold me on Matthew's dark secret life of aiding and abetting murder.

I loved this book! It had interesting characters and surprises until the end. It makes you think twice and appreciate different perspectives. I highly recommend this read and I’m looking forward to other books to come from Linda Kao.

Matt is a member of a group called the Second Sweep, a sort of vigilante group that investigates people for signs that they are marked by the devil after surviving close calls with death. In the past, Matt has assisted his father with these investigations, but now he is finally old enough to handle his own case. He is assigned to a teenage girl named Rae who lives in the small community of Mills Creek. Rae and her father were in a terrible car accident. Her father lost his life but Rae walked away without a scratch and the Sweep believes she may be Marked. It is Matt's job to determine if that is true. But as Matt gets to know Rae and her friends better and becomes invested in his life at Mills Creek High School, he begins to question whether the Mark is real at all.

"Maybe when all you do is look for signs of Lucifer, that's all you see."

I really enjoyed this highly inventive novel and it didn't feel like YA to me at all. The ending actually threw me for a loop and for YA I think it was pretty dark. I'd love a sequel to this and will definitely seek out more by Kao.

A Crooked Mark has so many facets. I've read it several times and each time I find something new. My first impression was fear--this is a scary story. The first sentence pulls you in with questions. Every time you think you know where the story is going, it veers. The protagonist is sympathetic and deplorable by turns. You (ok, I) keep reading one more chapter and then one more as Kao raises the stakes for Matt, who questions "What's real?" The end satisfies and the implications of this book (which I think are important) continue to roll around in my brain. Cindy

The underlying premise is that a father/son team is tasked with eliminating those marked by Lucifer before they can commit evil on the Devil's behalf.

A brilliant coming-of-age story, Matt is a home-schooled teenager who moves to a small town and now has to navigate both the pressures of high school as well as the demands of his father's expectations.

Read the first 19 pages and you will want to skip dinner so you can continue reading. Read further and you will want to peek at the ending, but don't do that. (Imagining how this resolves is part of the fun.) Read the rest of the book and you will be hoping for a sequel to find out how these characters continue to grow. Then you are going to want a movie made. And then you are going to want a TV Series ...

Yes. What Kao has created is THAT GOOD.

I don't want to put anyone off by pointing out that this is also a heartwarming, thought-provoking delight of a book, but I will tell you this. You will care deeply about the people in this story, and isn't that something.

Enjoy!

This is a YA supernatural coming of age.

Similar Book:
Scythe by Neal Shusterman

Synopsis:
Lucifer has the power to send souls back to the living to do his bidding. A father and son team up to find these marked souls and kill them before they can do any harm. But is Lucifer real and should they believe what they are doing?

This book was a fun read! Think father/son team hunting the supernatural while trying to navigate life. I think the devil’s mark was a unique idea. The story kept my attention and I wanted more of the danger. Great debut YA!
