Jenny Han meets CODA in this big-hearted YA debut about first love and Deaf pride at a summer camp.

Lilah is stuck in the middle. At least, that’s what having a hearing loss seems like sometimes—when you don’t feel “deaf enough” to identify as Deaf or hearing enough to meet the world’s expectations. But this summer, Lilah is ready for a change.

When Lilah becomes a counselor at a summer camp for the deaf and blind, her plan is to brush up on her ASL. Once there, she also finds a community. There are cute British lifeguards who break hearts but not rules, a YouTuber who’s just a bit desperate for clout, the campers Lilah’s responsible for (and overwhelmed by)—and then there’s Isaac, the dreamy Deaf counselor who volunteers to help Lilah with her signing.

Romance was never on the agenda, and Lilah’s not positive Isaac likes her that way. But all signs seem to point to love. Unless she’s reading them wrong? One thing’s for sure: Lilah wanted change, and things here . . . they're certainly different than what she’s used to.

First time I have ever read a novel that mirrored much of my life. I am deaf and was brought up orally. I’m not much into coming of age genre, but I really enjoyed the characters, their differences and interactions during camp. The author did a very good job in conveying many different scenarios that we often face in every day life as a Deaf individual. Even made one very real for me that I had never experienced where Isaac and Lilah had run into trouble one late night at the mart. No spoilers here.

A little slow to get into, and honestly kinda hard for me to finish, but it was overall a cute story. It has a good message. So I appreciated that.

I read this book when we returned to high school and tried it with my ASL IVH and ASL III H/III students. They loved this book and enjoyed the reading activities to go along with their analysis of characters, Deaf culture and language. This is a perfect project for students to get an insightful journey of a hard of hearing individual from a hearing family who does not sign. Discovering her place in this world and finding a place where she does not have to explain herself. Identity crisis of feeling not "Deaf enough" to embracing who she is at the moment and making a choice to dive in the world to become whole.

I just finished "Give Me A Sign," and I have to say it was a pretty enjoyable read. I really appreciated the representation of Deaf culture and the educational aspects woven into the story, especially in the setting of a summer camp.

The book captured the essence of summer camp life, but at times, it felt a bit on the juvenile side. Lilah, the main character, could be a bit whiny, and some of her actions didn't make sense to me. But hey, maybe I'm just getting too old for YA romance!

I loved that the story was told from Lilah's perspective, giving us a glimpse into her world with limited hearing and sign language knowledge. It really added a unique layer to the narrative, allowing us to experience her struggles and triumphs alongside her.

Speaking of romance, Lilah's love story with Isaac was sweet and heartwarming. However, I wish we had gotten some of Isaac's point of view to round out the story and add more depth to the Deaf representation.

Overall, "Give Me A Sign" was a cute and enjoyable read, and I'm excited to see more books exploring Deaf culture and representation in the future!

4.5⭐️ such a sweet and endearing coming of age YA story. I loved the representation of Deaf culture - and I learned a lot about different perspectives and what accessibility can really mean. Definitely worth a read!

I could NOT put this book down! It’s a sweet contemporary romance that is so easy to devour. There is humor, there is friendship, there is love, there is tackling of some tough issues in sweet, thoughtful ways. Lilah heads to summer camp as a junior counsellor, in hopes to prove herself and immerse more in a world (as a deaf child of hearing parents, one of her big goals is to learn ASL more fluently). One of my favorite aspects of this book is the rep—a huge majority of the characters have varying levels of disabilities. I also absolutely love the camp setting. I never even WENT to a sleep away camp as a kid, but man was I obsessed with the idea of it—somehow this book had me feeling nostalgic about my childhood daydreams! Finally, the voice. I absolutely loved immersing myself in Lilah’s world. The book was such a sweet, fun read and I cannot recommend it enough!

This was a very sweet novel about growing up and finding your place. It was the first novel I’ve read with a deaf MC. I think the author very deftly wove together what it means to discover your place in a world that many people aren’t quite familiar with. It was a YA plot for sure with the summer romance, but still very cute.

I really enjoyed this book about a summer camp for the hard of hearing and visual disabilities. It reminded me a little bit of Sharon Draper's Out of My Heart, the second book in the Melody series where she goes to a summer camp for kids with disabilities and finally experiences what so many of her "normal" friends have always done. However, this reads a little older, and our main character is a junior counselor rather than a first-time camper.

I appreciated the deaf rep, although it's impossible to represent the full spectrum of those who are hard of hearing. Still, I learned a lot about what it's like to navigate this world as a child who has been mainstreamed with the help of a hearing aid but still doesn't hear like other people. There was a lot of discussion about what accommodations could help, not just in school, but from friends and family as they interact with them daily. I also appreciated the author taking on the more serious topic that took place in the second half of the book. This scene could be triggering for others, so just be aware that it involves a huge misunderstanding that results in the police being called.

I really liked how Lilah and Isaac's friendship developed, and how patient he was with her lack of experience with ASL. ASL is another topic that is discussed in this book, and I learned a lot about different dialects, and that if you really want to learn to communicate in ASL with those who are hard of hearing, you should learn it from one of them, rather than in a class or something you watch online.

There were two things that prevented me from giving it 5 stars. First, as much as Lilah was tired of feeling judged by her friends at school or by those who she felt thought she wasn't "deaf enough", I felt that she was constantly judging others. She had some valid reasons for feeling the way she did, but I also thought she approached a lot of people with a preconceived notion about who they were and what they thought. But I do feel that she did a lot of growing during the story, which also included giving herself grace. The other thing that gave me concern was about the drinking. There was quite a bit of underage drinking, and those in charge who were of age didn't seem to be too concerned. But it wasn't the underage drinking so much as them making her the designated driver without her knowing ahead of time, which meant she didn't have her glasses with her. (I think kids under 21 can drink with responsible adults around, at the discretion of the adults.)

Overall, I enjoyed reading this summer romance story that included some serious topics, and I will be looking for more books from this author.

I received an advance review copy for free from NetGalley and the publishers, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING SUMMER READ!!

I am not much of a reader, so when I started this book I expected it to take me a few months to get through because I know my attention span is not great. But I finished this book in a few weeks. It is such a sweet and eye opening story about deaf culture and teen romance it brought me ALL THE FEELS!! I have started studying sign myself and found myself picturing the signs in my head when the characters were signing in the book (italics font). I am so happy to support a Deaf author and so glad I was recommended this book by my ASL teachers. Overall 10/10!

Finally found a great example of deaf characters done right by a Deaf author. Loved the different experiences reflected in the different characters' backgrounds and the way the story introduces readers to elements of Deaf culture. Highly recommend!
