A great introduction to puberty
5 Stars
A great introduction to puberty
This book is a great introduction to puberty and loving the body you have. It discusses all aspects of puberty including issues that are outside statistical norms. The “resources” people are upset about are references to things like suicide prevention (The Trevor Project- over 50% of kids with sexuality issues consider suicide). If you have an issue with your child knowing about this resource, you may be the very reason your child needs it!

I just got this book in today and immediately read it cover to cover. I have a seven year old daughter who is ready to start learning about the changes coming for her fast.

I'm not going to lie: I bought this book initially in retaliation to the conservative views slamming the American Girl Company. I've been a huge fan for my entire life and grew up reading many of their books, such as "The Care and Keeping of You!" After reading it, I'm very, VERY glad I did spend my money on this book. I'm absolutely stunned that anyone would be against this book. This book is constantly about love. It says over and over and OVER again to love yourself, love your body, and be kind to it. It talks about standing up for yourself and standing up for others. It talks about love and kindness. Who could be against that?

It is constantly referencing how the child needs to go to a trusted adult with questions or concerns. It always says to discuss concerns with your trusted adult and doctor. I am so happy with the age-appropriate, simple verbiage within this book. It deftly navigates very tough issues, from puberty to photoshopped bodies and transgender to people with disabilities. Every illustration is inclusive and gorgeous.

I will be very, very proud to have my daughter read this book. I am very proud to be raising a kind, empathetic, open, inclusive human being who will celebrate the diversity of life. I'm also proud to have this book in our home as the perfect resource for these new conversations.

It made me think if I didn’t do girl things or wear girl clothes maybe I’m not a girl. Maybe I need to be something else. Especially if I wear plaid and baggy clothes. There are some very good things in book but this is recommended for 4th - 6 th. and doesn’t empower little girls that they can be who they are. The fact they didn’t say Loving anyone is not a problem “ love is good” we love boys, girls, shoes, hunting, dogs, cats, and we don’t have to change our body’s to fit an emotion. Otherwise I’d need to change my body in to a puppy.

Like all the books in American Girl's Smart Girl Guides, this book is excellent. If you are new to the series, the others deserve your attention to: they are down-to-earth, sensible books for girls on a variety of topics (friends, peer pressure, etc). We read them as a family with our daughter and they have been terrific platforms for conversations about challenges in her life.

This particular title is no different. It's timely - deals with social media as well as other common issues about body image, exercise, dieting and the pressure to have a certain body type, makeup and appearance, and different ideas of beauty.

As many people know, it also touches on gender identity. Whether or not your child is cis or trans, the short section on this can still provide a basis for a conversation with your daughter on the topic. It's approached from a matter-of-fact, non-dramatic angle. It's pretty minor component of the book; from some of the uproar you'd think it dominated the content. In reality, it's 3 pages out of 100. I read it with my daughter and it was very anti-climatic after all the fuss.

I got this book for my nine year old granddaughter who, like most nine year olds can use reliable information given to her in an age appropriate manner. The reviews that are angry over one line in the book, take the line out of context. The authors are very, very careful to make clear that parents should/must/will be involved in their minor child's care. More importantly, this is a great resource for the almost tween who needs to be able to review girl's health related matters her parents already share with her. It is beautifully written, age appropriate, with nice illustrations and quizzes to help her understand how she views herself, etc. As to LGBTQ matters, it is my experience in urban and rural areas that children in a typical general population school know that there are nonbinary/trans/gay children in their midst. And those children need to understand that the way they see themselves and understand themselves is not evil. Parents, ultimately, must figure out what is best for children. This book is clear about this and is sensitive and nonjudgmental to all children.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
As a child of the '90s, I grew up with American Girl. It's a brand that I've always valued and I've bought several of their books for my kids (such as The Care and Keeping Of You). When I saw this book I was really excited. I have an 11-year-old daughter who feels a little uncomfortable in her body. I thought this book would be a great companion to our discussions.

The book touches on a lot of sensitive topics that might be challenging for parents to bring up with their pre-teens - and frankly, topics pre-teens might have a hard time bringing up with their parents. A lot of it is very valuable information and a lot of validation during a difficult time in children's lives. That being said, there is some content that some readers might feel is concerning. In my opinion, read the book first and use this as a discussion guide with your child. There is no single book that every parent is going to agree with. This book touches on a lot of the issues of today and some parents might be uncomfortable with the approach to certain hot topics outlined in this book.

My daughter and I speak freely about all the topics the book outlined and it gave me something to reference that wasn't just "Mom talking". It corroborated what I've already been teaching my daughter which has made it feel more like truth instead of bias. I appreciate American Girl for tackling some really difficult topics and doing their best to provide snippets of important information in their usual format with wonderfully vibrant illustrations.

Let American Girl help encourage discussion and take the wheel from there. I really like this book (my daughter does too) and it's been a great tool to deepen the great conversations we already have about body issues.
