A bold new dystopian thriller about an experimental mental health retreat center for young adults where everything is not what it seems—and one boy who will risk everything to escape.

Seb has been selected for a new experimental mental health center called HappyHead, designed to solve the national crisis of teenage unhappiness. There he and fellow participants will complete in a series of assessments meant to test them, so they can better face the challenges of the real world. Seb is determined to win so he can change how people see him and make his parents proud.

But then Seb meets a mysterious participant named Finn who has drawn unwanted attention to himself by resisting the program’s rules. The leaders want everyone to believe Finn is mentally unstable but as Finn exposes cracks in the system around them, Seb is left questioning the true nature of the challenges--and wondering if Finn is actually the only one he can really trust.

Something sinister is at play…and as the assessments take a dark turn, it becomes impossible to ignore the voice in his head telling him that even if he wins, there might be no way out.

5.0 out of 5 stars “Consistency of the plot made this a 10/10 read for me”
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 26, 2023
As someone who works in mental health, reading a book by Josh Silver a mental health nurse really brought HappyHead, as a place, to life. I can tell you that parts of it were so realistic, I felt it in my bones. The characters were brought in so fluidly, nicknames for people as you would have in real life... so well thought through. The realistic portrayal of mental health meant that I found myself laughing at Seb's inner monologue, the flow of the conversation never missing a beat. The description of the outer world really enticed my senses - I could almost feel things whooshing past me and at some point, I could smell the antiseptic.

For a YA novel, especially with LGBTQI+-friendly themes, I loved the honesty of it. The description and development of young love and understanding oneself at that age is difficult, multi-layered, and delicate. However, Silver beautifully puts it into words and I found myself getting so invested in the relationships between the characters. The book's success in handling delicate subjects resonated with me.

The characters are well-developed, and the writing style is compelling and relatable. Easy to read, I read in some other reviews that people finished it in one sitting - Although I did not read it in one night, I can see how that is possible. Some of the tasks were thought-provoking and stressful, with Silver really showing off his brilliant and innovative storytelling skills.

I hated that it ended. It left me wanting more more more immediately, but I understand why an author would end a book in this way. The pacing, the character development and the consistency of the plot made this a 10/10 read for me. I enjoyed it, I don't know what I was expecting when I picked this up, but somehow it exceeded my expectations. Although this book was not written for my demographic, once I read it, I knew exactly who to recommend this to and have already gifted it to two young adults in my life. "Like Hunger Games but better" rings true to me, because it felt more real. It felt compelling and also left me hoping and wishing to the very last page.

I cannot believe this is a debut novel for Silver, as it has clearly been written by someone that wanted to make reading it enjoyable. And in this case, succeeded wholeheartedly.

Interesting concept but not as intriguing as it could have been. It’s too realistic in the sense that I expected it to be more gruesome and dark — other than that, quite entertaining

5.0 out of 5 stars incredible, exciting debut

For a debut novel, I was completely hooked from the first page. Sebastian is a real, silly, and relatable protagonist that finds himself in just about the worst place imaginable.

The secrets and mystery keep on coming in this book, and every time you think you know where it’s turning, you’re still surprised.

March 2024 can’t come soon enough!

Josh silver has made on hell of a debut, and this book blew me away ! From the tension to the clever build of the happy head facility, with a romance that has you rooting for Finn and seb all the way through, this book is incredible!
Also that ending was criminal!

5.0 out of 5 stars Only bad thing is being left on a cliff hanger

This book ended my reading slump. I finished it in a few hours. I was weary with it being a dystopian as I don’t really read them, but this book ended that and I will be reading more dystopians now. Every character had been carefully written and were believable. The story was well paced even though I wished it went on longer. The romance felt a little rushed but not to a point where it was love at first sight and it still needs to be explored in book two. Normally I don’t read series but I will be picking up the next book. Very challenge the characters had to face made me glad that it was just fiction because some of the challenges were ones I’d never do. Every time I thought I figured the story out, something would shock me and change that. Finn was my favourite character though seb was still good.
Can’t wait for the next book and for this to be a debut novel the next one has to some how top this book and that won’t be easy so good luck to the author.
