Dancing: An Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Novella Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 3,124 ratings

Vampire hunter Anita Blake leaps into uncharted territory in the all-new novella from #1 New York Times bestselling author Laurell K. Hamilton.

For most people, summer barbecues are nothing to be afraid of. But Anita isn’t exactly plain vanilla—and neither is her love life. So it takes a special kind of courage to attend a barbecue thrown by her friend Sergeant Zerbrowski. Walking into a backyard full of cops and their families with wereleopards Micah and Nathaniel both looking gorgeous on her arm won’t be easy, even with almost-four-year-old Matthew Vespucci to break the ice…

Anita is determined to have a good time with her family, just like everyone else. But it doesn’t take long for tensions to rise among the adults and kids. And Anita will learn that gossip and innuendo can be just as dangerous as anything the undead can throw at her…

I liked Dancing a lot, because it showed Anita with her live- in loves in a different atmosphere than most of the books; there's no police work, or too many other characters. The plot is simple. Anita and two of her main sweeties are invited to another policeman's yearly barbecue, and they bring Matthew, a friend's young son they've been babysitting quite often.
The story shows us what it might be like if they had their own child, which Anita thinks about during this party, since Nathaniel wants the three of them to have a child. There's also a little drama among the policeman's wives when they realized Nathaniel is a stripper one of the wives hired for her bachelorette party and they all come into the kitchen where Nathaniel is helping the hostess with the food. Anita does not react like she probably would have in earlier books by picking a fight. She helps stop a fight by talking with another cop who had been lied to about what Nathaniel and his wife had done--or in this case, not done--at the party where he was paid to perform. Anita also talks it all out with Nathaniel fairly quickly, but then this is just a novella. There's a lot about dancing, which I found interesting.
This story showed how the relationship between Anita and her live- in loves has grown over time, and would be, I hope, the perfect set up for them to have a child. For the last few books Anita has certainly thought about how she wants her life to change. This story will also appeal to anyone living what is generally called an "alternative lifestyle" by showing that whether the relationship is polyamorous, S & M, homosexual, etc, that they are valid and real and when enough people honestly show their friends and family who they really are, and everyone stands up for their right to live the way they want, eventually such relationships will be accepted. This story has a lot of emotion about how scary it can be to show who you really are, and very little of the police procedural usually present. I loved the change, and the way Anita is changing. Good work!

Short, sweet, and informative story line. People being people can and do start fighting when it’s inappropriate and love it and this sorted out in a lovely way. I enjoyed it very much. Highly recommend this book and series.

I have been reading the Anita books for years. The last few I have felt that Anita was becoming too powerful and her relationships seemed to be getting in the way of the plots and story lines. This is the perfect way to throw in a little of the relationship stuff without cluttering the novels. I read this about the same time as Shutdown, the free novella she released during the government shutdown. I loved both and highly recommend both if you enjoy Anita. Of course she had to describe the guys, she does in every story she writes, it is how LKH tells her stories. I tend to skim those parts as I know what everyone looks like, but I really don't mind. It is heartwarming to see Anita interact with other women and not hate every one of them. I like when she has respect for some of the other female personality types.. sometimes her disdain for female stereotypes gets old. This story she interacts with Zebrowski's wife and seems to actually get along with some of the others. Also, I love to see Nathaniel shine. It is a nice short story, and I didn't mind giving my $3 to read it.

I like the way, Hamilton reverses roles, she is so ahead of her time. And she writes like an angel, even if people think she’s the devil.

A cute vignette in the domestic world of Antis Blake. There is no crime or mystery in this short out take scene. It is not necessary to read to understand the over-arching plot of the series, but it's a cute bonus story and a quick read. Although Nathaniel's jobs are mentioned there are none of the gratuitous adult scenes the series has become known for.

Some good backstory on Anita and her were-leopards. It was interesting to see the Zerbrowski's interacting with Anita outside of the normal police work.

Funny, I just noticed that Rudolph Storr wasn't there...

I have been in love with that man for years. Any book he is in makes me happy and this was just a darling story. Now I just need to find my own Nathaniel

I've read all of Laurell Hamilton's Anita Blake series and gave this one 4 stars because she discussed the relationship between herself and Micah and Nathaniel in more detail. They finally had a family day out among 'normal' people and we were able to see how everyone handled the interactions between the normal humans and the 'special not quite so human'. We saw Anita's true self in more depth and her feelings toward Micah and Nathaniel were more obvious for once and not hidden when she was around her human friends. Nathaniel was finally able to be more of who wants to be, a wife, and Micah more of an equal to those who have a tendency to place him in a category of weird and not acceptable in a human environment. I'm glad these three are finally coming out of their big closet and just being who they are meant to be. I hope they stay on track and don't fall back into their hiding mode which is totally up to Anita and how she handles human reactions in the future. Anyone who can face vambires should be able to handle criticism from those who are ignorant of other races and she should solidify her lifestyle so that her private life is stronger and happier and be able to handle her professional life as someone who is balanced in life.

How incredible LKH can write such a book about one of the sweetest subject - dancing - using cops and lycanthropes as players. Writing is a gift, and this book is a gift for us readers. Thank you Ms Hamilton

4.0 out of 5 stars Kurzgeschichte
Reviewed in Germany on October 2, 2013
Sonst empfehlenswert!

I love this small stop between the novels, it fills in more gaps and brings more out of the couple.
A beautiful and very realistic story while keeping to the series storylines.
Bravo
