In Hunter's third novel (after 2016's Curse on the Land) to feature probationary special agent Nell Ingram, someone, or something, is targeting a Tennessee senator and his family with bullets and fire. Nell's unit, Unit Eighteen of the Psychometry Law Enforcement Division (PsyLED) of Homeland Security, polices paranormal entities and people with unusual abilities. When suspicion for the attacks on the senator falls on DNAKeys, a lab that may be experimenting on paranormals, PsyLED is called in, but the body count rises, and Nell fears that their efforts may be too little too late. A great 3rd book!
Nell has quickly become one of my favorite characters in fiction. I have read Jane Yellowrock for years and LOVE her, but Nell is just an easier character to connect to. She continues to grow and discover who she is in this, the third book in the Soulwood series.
The pacing of the story is spot on, I never felt an urge to put it down or take a break and never was like "Can we just get on with it already???" The mystery that is the framework for Nell's continued growth is interesting and well developed, but what I really enjoy is continuing to watch Nell grow from the "church woman" into herself. That she embraces some of who she was before, while growing well beyond the limiting parts of her background.
The continuing development of the secondary and tertiary characters is spot on as well. I'm a sucker for good background character that are more than just archetypes!
As many others have said I finished the book and then went back to the beginning of the series and started over.
Faith Hunter always delivers!
The third novel in the Soulwood series focuses mostly on the Paranormal procedural aspect. The main character, Nell, has a really unique earth magic and grew up very sheltered in a polygamist cult. There’s satisfying character development for Nell as she grows into her independence as a strong woman in a modern world and growing to accept and cherish her otherness. I highly suggest reading the Jane Yellowrock series by Faith Hunter, too, as there’s some character overlap.
