Last Hit (A Hitman Novel Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 1,346 ratings

From two bestselling authors—the first in a deliciously bold new series that takes readers to the most dangerous edge of desire . . .

Nikolai: I have been a contract killer since I was a boy. For years I savored the fear caused by my name, the trembling at the sight of my tattoos. The stars on my knees, the marks on my fingers, the dagger in my neck, all spoke of danger. If you saw my eyes, it was the last vision you’d have. I have ever been the hunter, never the prey. With her, I am the mark and I am ready to lie down and let her capture me. Opening my small, scarred heart to her brings out my enemies. I will carry out one last hit, but if they hurt her, I will bring the world down around their ears.

Daisy: I’ve been sheltered from the outside world all my life. Home-schooled and farm-raised, I’m so naive that my best friend calls me Pollyanna. I like to believe the best about people. Nikolai is part of this new life, and he’s terrifying to me. Not because his eyes are cold or my friend warns me away from him, but because he’s the only man who has ever seen the real me beneath the awkwardness. With him, my heart is at risk . . . and also, my life.

This is not your normal killer/virgin story. No cliché to be found here folks.

Nick/Nickolai is a hit man that has been released from the Bratva. While scoping his next mark, he sees Daisy. She is a vision of light and innocence that he hungers for but one whom he knows he will never be worthy of. Once their unplanned meeting takes place however, he cannot help but fall even more into all that is beautiful about his Daisy. While the heroine is naïve and unsure about so much in her new life, she is drawn to the stranger that is Nick.

What results is a charming, awkward courting between the hero and heroine. Both are inexperienced in dating much less relationships. They fumble with conversation and the simple steps of getting to know each other only adds to the charm. The movie night date was a wonderful disaster of which I’ve never read the likes of.

Nick is an absolute alpha hero and his taking care of Daisy was hilarious at times. Daisy was reluctant to accept anything from Nick and yet he helped her in such a manner that she often didn’t recognize it for what it was. When she did, she was strong enough to stand up to him and I was pleased these authors gave her that backbone. You’re gonna love the way he works around some of her needs.

About three-fourths of the way in, the story felt a little drawn out but only because Nick and Daisy are separated and their scenes together were where the true magic was. I loved the way Daniel coerced Nick into letting him somewhat, kind of, a little bit, become his friend. I think Regan and Daniel’s story is next and I will definitely be picking that one up!

If you love your alpha heroes damaged, socially awkward, prepared to do anything for the woman they consider their own, you’re going to love Nick.

If you love your heroines to be sweet, innocent, lost in the world, naïve and yet able to stand up to a killer, you’re going to love Daisy.

I actually hate that this story ended! I wanted more!

POV – both H/h

Epilogue – none but we get a look into their short future and I suspect we’ll be seeing more of them in the next books of the series

Cliffhanger – no except for Reagan and Daniel’s storyline

Safety Gang: **********************S P O I L E R S**********************

Daisy’s father slaps her but it was the only time he had ever done so and they are both shocked by it.

After meeting the heroine, the hero hires a prostitute for oral sex but is unable to go through with it. This really could’ve been left out and I was disappointed that these authors would include a scene that’s going to eliminate so many readers.

Daisy’s roommate Reagan is raped but it takes place off the page and is not described in the least little bit. The reader is simply given the assumption through the heroine that this took place.

Nick is a hitman that was part of the Russian 'mafia'. He is scouting out his next target and comes across Daisy. Daisy has been overly sheltered her whole 21 years of her life and is on her own for the first time.
Nick is attracted to Daisy and feels compelled to protect her, even before he meets her. He watches her from his apartment across the street. Her innocence, purity and happy personality is the opposite of who he is.
This is a classic, bad guy meets and falls in love with the pure angel.

3 stars is okay
4 is "I like it". And I did like this book.

What did I like?
-Nick is sexy, brave, great at his job, will do anything for Daisy, generous and loving-
-Daisy is sweet, innocent beautiful and brave. She is able to see people for who they are, not just what is on the surface. She is working incredibly hard to be independent, even though she is broke and on her own for the first time.
- the other characters are interesting - they don't play huge roles, but they added to the story. Who are the allies, who are the enemies?
- The overall plot. Nick is not your perfectly squeaky clean guy (Like a Navy Seal, or a cop or firefighter). He is an assassin. Not a noble profession. So how do we overcome our hero being an anti-hero? How can we like a heroine that falls for a murderer. Well...we do....
- Yeah - steamy scenes are steamy
- There is some action in this book - not super graphic though.
- Their romance is pretty great. It's a young love that flourishes. Not a lot of basic friendship seemed to be developed in this book, but it goes straight to the heavy duty - LOVE.

What didn't I like?
- Daisy was a bit TOO innocent for me. The way she was raised - it made sense. but it was just a bit too innocent. Hopefully Nick will keep her from naively being taken advantage of. Even though she was super innocent (for example, she had never been to the movies), when she get a new phone - she knows the shortened text lingo right away. When I got my first cell phone with texting - I was not texting like a pro until months later....
- Nick was a bit OTT in his overzealous response to Daisy. He was immediately smitten. He threw himself 110 % into protecting her and taking care of her. That happened a bit quickly. Would have liked to see him fall for her through some dates, conversations, etc.
- The ending - Daisy does something that just didn't really ring true to me. A bit extreme. But I went with the flow.

This book ends with the Couple's HEA. The book sets up for part 2 - the plot is not 100% resolved. But it's not a cliffhanger either.

"I watch her through my bathroom window. I've placed one of the four rented chairs in here for that express purpose. I tell myself it is not creepy as the american girls would say, because I watch everyone. But really I only watch her"

There is something wrong with me. Because I LOVED Nikolai. And not in a reasonable way! Oh no, in a hysterical Belieber fan way and if anyone says anything wrong about my Nikolai, I will post a hysterical screaming video of myself on youtube where I yell at you all to leave him alone!

And now that is out of the way and you have all backed off and no one is even reading this any more:

I loved this book! Nikolai I thought was adorable, seriously, the Russian Hitman, yes, he is so adorable, I just wanted to smoosh his little cheeks and eat him up.....

Erm...anyway, moving on!

It was romantic, often humorous (Nick has seriously no clue about dating and women) with a bit of drama and action. It is a quite often sweet story of two dysfunctional people with abnormal childhoods finding each other. With guns. And the Russian Mafia!

It was in a word - Awesome!

Come?

Nikolai (Nick) is the type of Hero I want in every book, but rarely find. Strong, sexy, possessive, and utterly lovable. Can hardly wait to read the next in the series.

Often when reading erotic or romance novels, there are situations or plot lines that are implausible or difficult to believe. If you're like me, you've probably never had a man offer you a million dollars to pose as his fiancee; or rescue you from an attack then whisk you away to his private island; or stumbled across the snowbound cabin of a reclusive billionaire. These are common plot devices that are fantasies & it's whether or not you like the characters that will keep you from rolling your eyes or laughing out loud.
This has a similar beginning: a Russian hit man who spies (stalks?) on a naive young woman who's a virgin in every sense. Hey, it could happen. So you start reading, hoping the characters will make it worth your time (& money). And for me it was.
Nick is the battered product of a horrific childhood spent being moulded into a killer by the Bratva, a kind of Russian hit man factory. He's more machine than man. Maybe it 's because he was kicked out at 15 that there is still some humanity left. Enough to let him recognize something beautiful & pure when he sees it.
Daisy's mother was killed in a robbery when she was a child & her's father's reaction was to lock her away from a world full of danger. But by 21, she's had enough. Desperate to experience life, she runs away to Minneapolis & ends up sharing an apartment in a dingy part of town. She has little money & no possessions but she has freedom.
Nick has been watching her building. His next hit lives there & during surveillance, he spots Daisy. He didn't know people like her existed & is fascinated by her innocence, delight in every day things & lack of agenda. When he "accidentally" bumps into her in the laundry room, of course the attraction is immediate & mutual. Hey, don't judge...they have more in common than you think.
And so begins their story. They're a study in contrasts. He is hard, tattooed, cynical & socially inept. She is soft, naive, open & socially inept. Neither had a normal upbringing or any experience with real relationships. Because the story is told in alternating chapters, we are privy to their thoughts & feelings so we understand both points of view. It's sweet & at times funny, poignant or sad. They each have secrets to tell as they become closer & learn to let someone into their lives.
Unfortunately, it's Nick life that comes back to haunt him & puts Daisy in danger. I won't spill the beans but as this is Book #1, you know they end up together somehow, although not all issues are resolved. There is a fair amount of sexual content but it's the language that is more graphic than the sex.
Yes, it's fantasy but that's why we read these books. It provides a little escapism. I liked these two & the author has taken people who are polar opposites & created a story where it makes sense they end up together. So you can sit back at the end of a hard day, shut off the world, suspend your disbelief & enjoy a little romance.
