A book to help you achieve mindfulness and practice meditation while looking at the world's greatest works of art.

Psychiatrist and leading meditation practitioner Christophe André guides you through the art of mindfulness, beginning with art itself.
Looking at Mindfulness collects classic and esoteric paintings, from Rembrandt to Hopper to Magritte, and offers a lucid commentary on the inner workings of each. André describes the dynamic on the canvas, and turns to the viewer's own reactions, exploring the connection between what we see and what we feel. Moving beyond the art on the page, André teaches us what it means to consider our surroundings, our daily interactions and obligations, and their effect on our inner well-being and mental clarity. The paintings are a visual and tangible first step to understanding mindfulness and the benefits of living in the moment. In practicing mindfulness, within ourselves and out in the world, each of us can make immediate, meaningful, and permanent changes in our well-being and the well-being of others.

Beautifully written, wonderfully accessible for any novice or expert,
Looking at Mindfulness delivers practical steps and a comprehensive understanding of the practice and meaning of mindfulness and meditation. An authentic and effortless voice, André brings clarity to what it means to live mindfully and how we can make a more conscious effort to do so.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A work of art in its own right, and a meditative tour de force."—Jon Kabat-Zinn, author of Wherever You Go, There You Are

"A masterpiece....Christophe André, takes a wholly fresh approach to mindfulness, offering beautiful paintings as the starting points for meditation....Everything about this book is exquisite: its language, its instruction, and its gentle insistence that each of us has to practice cultivating this clarity for ourselves. I whole-heartedly recommend it."—
Mark Williams, Emeritus Professor of Clinical Psychology, University of Oxford

"A poetic, compassionate guide to mindfulness, offering a fresh and thoughtful path."—
Publisher's Weekly

"In this internationally best-selling book, French psychiatrist André guides the reader through the practice of mindfulness to art itself. Using color photographs of classic and modern works, the author shows readers how to quiet the outer world and intensify their presence in the moment, neither trying to escape it or change it. André responds to each art piece in terms of feelings and sensory perceptions, helping readers to visualize themselves inside the canvas, smelling, hearing, and really seeing the scene. A fascinating book, suitable for those who are interested in art or the discipline of mindfulness."—

I think this is the best book on meditation out there. I cannot recommend it more highly.

Since we think in pictures rather than words. I remember the lessons more throughly and profoundly.

What an extraordinary accomplishment. This book is a revelation; a gorgeous guided meditation into sensory integration, stillness, and presence.

The prose is clear and fluid but, read with care, it registers as poetry. The artworks are chosen with animated insight. Beautiful production values (clear color reprints and details of artworks, overall graphic design, paper stock, etc.) offer pleasure in hand and aid in the cultivation and awareness toward which the author guides us. The translation is so beautiful, lucid, tonally intimate that I originally thought it was composed in English. Overall, I felt as if I were across the table from a wise and tender companion. M. André's patients are fortunate indeed.

I have read hundreds of books related both to spirituality and to art. This one has changed my day to day experience in a way that happens only rarely. This book deserves a wider audience.

I continue to be mesmerized by the beauty of the words--and oh yes, the art chosen--that totally calm my spirit. I'm a 90 mph DOer and to move me to a wonderfully calm BEing is such a gift! I'm having longer glimpses of how easy it is to love when I'm not racing and judging and comparing. Thank You!! Christophe for this gift of showing us how to use our senses to see our own inner world.

Challenging and compelling. A good opportunity to learn, confirm, and practice mindfulness. The author offers a starting point and application methods. Lovely art and mostly very well addressed. I will keep this book for reference and much more practice.

I deeply enjoy this book. It brings together the best of eastern practice and thought with western beauty, wisdom, and humanity. Christophe Andre blends science, direct experience, literature, and heart through the use of some of the most striking artistic images in our history. Not only does it teach me to look at art with more scrutiny, but all things in life, including all of myself. It has made my life better and will continue to do so.

My library is wonderful yet books are limited for many reasons. I do not need to increase my personal library yet appreciate the opportunity to purchase used books that I truly would like to read and then pass along. I am a docent at a museum and will enjoy the book and then passing it to other like minded art appreciators

This book is an absolute treasure. I read just one or two pages each morning, and it brings me to a place of calm awareness and self-kindness. I have read many mindfulness books/blogs, and this one is truly special. The integration of art and crystal-clear language makes it a joy to read every time.

Beautifully presented. The paintings are a selection of classic and modern art with an in depth analysis of each work. After each commentary the reader is asked to relate their own reactions and feeling to each work of art. Then the author makes the reader aware of the connection of our own surroundings and life experiences to what is visually happening in the painting.
At the conclusion of each chapter a "lesson" is offered. Actually it is a short synopsis of the chapter and the key points to remember. The book is written in a way that makes it easy to understand and it is actually very straightforward.

5.0 out of 5 stars Art as a gateway to mindfulness.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 5, 2015
Very much in the tradition of Sister Wendy Beckett (who writes from a Christian perspective): a quiet, reflective, almost poetic style which gently nudges the reader to appreciate how works of art embody and exemplify the qualities of mindfulness that are so elusive to pin down in words. A book to savour slowly - I purchased the kindle version and on my iPad, it works a treat - the works of art can be sized to fit the full screen so that I can actually see the paintings in high detail. Not sure it would be as effective on a black-and-white kindle reader... Christophe Andre's prose has the authentic ring of experience behind it. He is careful not to overstate the benefits of mindfulness (a danger in many other writers I've encountered); instead, he is clear about the options and choices mindfulness creates for us. Mindfulness is not a way out of life's problems - but a way of being present in a way which fosters self/other compassion, and a clear-eyed awareness of the miracle of simply being here. Highly recommended.
